Rear liftgate cover removal?

Paints been holding up great. Im surprised it looks as good as it does considering it was my first time painting auto parts. Its been though storms sand, grim, car washes, dirt, etc and still looks good. And i agree it does look better imo
 
Just this past weekend I took mine off and painted it flat black. I think i am going to pull it off again and try the Plastidip instead. The flat black didn't turn out as well as I thought it would....
 
Okay, quick question. Looks like the emblem/ Toyota logo pops off, what is the best way to remove it? Also, did you strip or sand the chrome completely off before painting it or did you just scuff it up?
 
i didnt have chrome, so that answer i can not talk from experience. but some people on here remove the chrome using oven cleaner.

then a light sand, cleaning with alcohol, and paint.

i removed the emblem with a flat head, a hot air gun, and floss. its held on with sticky foam. i heated it up, slid the flat head under it and pryed it up some, enough to slide the floss under it. the floss kept breaking tho, i would sugest maybe fishing wire? if you have it around. theres also like "pins" that are there for alignment. but those are easy to work around. be careful if you use the flat head, because you can scratch and/or dent it.

if your not 100% sure you want to get rid of the chrome completely, i would plastidip it and give it a test run.:biggrin2:

I've been wanting to get rid of my chrome garnish as well. I have the same Titanium Silver you do. You mentioned buying the paint at Advance, but what did you use to paint the piece with (ie brush, spray)? Was it something like this?The only car paint I have ever bought was the tiny touch up container that has a combo brush or roller ball.

Paying $15 for supplies is much better than paying $150 for the pre-painted OEM piece! It looks really good, I would never have known it wasn't factory. Thanks for the thread -

Thats pretty much what I used was dupicolor, it's some pretty good stuff. When I did the black I was trying out to see if I could paint it myself saving $130. Since the black turned out better than what I expected I painted it OEM 1D4 (silver) and IMO opinion in also turned out good, so it's something I would recommend doing, but only if you have a good day to do it. (I'm a perfectionist.) Regarding the chrome thing all I did was wash it and sand it with some medium grade level sand paper. I was recommended something lighter but that took way to long to get the roughness I wanted/needed. I also used my gf's (I'd try using your own though, lol) hair dryer to pull off the Toyota emblem. I washed and sanded when I did the black paint and the OEM color match. Also I'd invest in some clear, makes it smooth as OEM and protects the paint. Another note is that I found that the best spray distance is around 4-5in.

if so,
i think 4 to 5 inches is perfect as well. its what i do. gives it a thick, yet not runny coat. the key is to start off the piece (to the side of it) and go all the way across it before letting go of it. that way there is no overlapping. if that makes any sense. thats the way i do it anyway.

I think I like black better -- could be because I 've been wanting to do that myself. I think if you were to stay gray, a darker shade would look good.
 
No problem, also fyi for anyone interested the paint is holding up just like the day I painted it. It's definitely worth doing if you wanna save around $130.
 
Nicely done Skyline! Looks pretty damn good for a rattle can. Personally I think everything looks good in black, but then again my 4Runner is black... :D
