Rear Mount Turbo exhaust

We did consider both under hood and rear mount. problems with under hood are, like you said the heat, manifolds are expensive if you can even find them, and they are a pain to make. and it doesn't sound as cool. lol. and for the lag. clownmeat starts building boost at 1200 rpm and is at full 7psi at about 3 grand. he can power brake and launch at the full 7psi. even for a under hood setup that's pretty impressive. We were able to accomplish this by doing the math and finding the appropriate sized turbo and volume of charge pipe.

if you do a under hood I strongly recommend a intercooler but behind the grill not above the engine. (just a personal opinion) I just couldn't justify using an intercooler to cool the air when you are cooking it over a engine.:flame: and with a rear mount a intercooler is not necessary.

Ya, I wasnt really thinking about the manifold. I think that would end up being a big issue for me as I would have to have it custom built which would be pricey. My biggest drawback right now is that I dont own a welder. So either I buy one or find someone to weld for me which could get pricey. But with the hastle of the manifold and if lag time isnt that bad I would just go with a rear mount then. Honestly Im doing it for useable power, not to try to race anyone, so Im not concerned with a 0.whatever second difference in lag.

I saw you mentioned that you and clownmeat are both under $1000 into the builds. Is that a realistic price (not including paying someone to weld) for me, being that I would be building the system completely from scratch?? Basically Im asking if you or clownmeat already had some of the needed parts laying around which you didnt have to purchase and I would.

I always wondered how the 3.0 would be as well. everyone knows it needs it.

no doubt it does.

oh man. I promised myself I would keep the engine mods pretty stock . but... the good thing about a remote mount is that if the engine is swapped to something else, it's not too much work to reroute a few things.

so tempted to just mount a turbo and little self-contained oil pump on my exhaust for the sound alone.

honestly we both pretty much started from scratch. but I have my own welder and plasma cutter ect. but in the post above I have a list of all the major components. I also spent $60
on the 1/4" steel feed line and 1/2" tranny cooler line. about $30 in brass fittings from ace, about $20 for the pvc pieces for the charge pipe. then I'm gonna go to an exhaust shop to get a piece of 2 1/2" bent from the turbo out the back and a piece bent from the pvc charge pipe through the fender well to the intake. I'm planning on around $100 maybe less, but I get discounts at the exhaust shop. also a turbo timer is something you will want to run the scavenge pump after you shut off the engine for a couple minutes. I might be missing a couple things here and there but that's everything major. and then if you decided for me to make you a pipe $150

Great post and I may be interested in doing something like this as I am looking for more power, the only problem is that I have already put front and rear plate bumpers on without a body lift and I would really prefer not too have one.. Is it completely necessary to have a body lift, just curious how sts has their system setup with the charge pipe running along side the frame rails... Also how much power were you guys estimating this system makes? Comparable to the trd supercharger with supporting fuel mods??

well the sts kit is on a tacoma which has some minor differences. I'm sure it can be done but the easiest and most efficient way is with a body lift. but that's one reason why I just want to offer the turbo exhaust pipe and not a kit so people can arrange there setup the way they want it. but if I do get an order for a pipe I will need to know if the runner has a body lift or not so I can adjust the angle to make clearance for the turbo. So in turn with a body lift you can get your turbo higher. not too sure of the actual hp increase but theoretically every psi is 10 horse so roughly 70 hp. you can see in that youtube link that I posted that it issubstantially quicker than stock.

So its been almost 4 years since I have signed onto these boards, but this post is very interesting. I would definately be interested in purchasing this. Sounds like it would be great for a little extra power when towing and a fun project. Still interested to hear the fuel consumption numbers when you have them. Thanks for all the pictures and details of the install. Keep them coming.

A couple of questions.

The scavenger pump. It mounts on the return side of the turbo. Does it draw oil pressure from other engine components, ie camshaft journals? Does it drop the oil pressure on the engine?

Would it be able to push oil through an auxiliary oil filter?

Can you hear the BOV when decelerating?

How often does the waste gate open up? Is it dumped into the atmosphere or plumbed back into the exhaust?

Have you though about a pressure adjusting fuel regulator that increases fuel pressure in correlation to boost psi?

I am very interested in this and the possibility of doing one but putting it under the hood. Cant see the pics here at work so looking forward to getting home and looking at the thread all over again.

thw oil feed just runs off engine pressure. the problem is getting the oil back to the engine. so the pump is on the return to do that. you use an oil restricter at the turbo feed flange so it keeps pressure built up in the line/engine so the psi drop is not much. you do need to add about a quart more oil.

yes i was actually thinking of add ing an aux filter before the pump.

i dont hav my bov on yet but i know clownmeat's is very audibule.

the wastegate opens any time you are at 7psi so any time there is a load on the engine and its around 3200 rpm. Its wide open like it should be. :eyebrows: nice and loud.

all the stock fuel components are fine. the only thing we have considered is water meth injection.

If I do go through with this in the spring I will definately consider having you do the exhaust. I would have to go to a local shop here and see what they charge.

So both you and clownmeat ran the intake through the passenger wheelwell . . . are there any other pausable options? Or is that just the best of them?

Also, how loud is the exhaust? Im not concerned about turbo/bov/wastegate. Those are good sounds. :music: But I would want the exhaust to be as quiet as possible (relatively) with it being my daily driver.

Finally, driven conservatively will the system possibly improve gas mileage any (given I keep the same tire/lift/weight set up I currently have)?

thanks man! this is exciting stuff

it's definitely not quiet lol. though you could probably run a small muffler and route the wastegate dump back into the exhaust

why would routing the wastegate into the exhaust reduce exhaust noise? Is the wastegate really a big noise factor?

the wastegate when open to the atmosphere is a huge noise issue because its just another exhaust exit running unmufflered (when it opens). when doing these systems and trying to keep stuff as quiet as possible you will want to run the wastegate back into the exhaust pipe then exit everything into some type of muffler. this quiets turbo systems down a lot. use to do the honda thing with turbos and it was surprising what you could do with a simple high flow cat or muffler in the system.

have you or clownmeat seen any issues running 7 psi thru the stock air management system?

This looks amazing, and sounds fierce!
I'm looking forward to pursuing this in the future as soon as some funding crosses my path!

Thanks so much for doing this guys!

Thanks for the info.

Just to clarify, this question is for yoterman, not me

well those guy pretty much answered the noise question.

there really isnt any other place to run the charge pipe other than the wheel well. you could go in side the frame rail but you would be right next to the exhaust and i dont know if there is room without a body lift.
