I take it you have a Limited.
Do you have the key with you or in your pocket when you try the exterior buttons? It senses the smart key same as the doors or ignition. Mine worked right from the factory.
The problem was actually that my wife left the spare key in the glove box. So the smart key functions cease to work. the rear window and the touch sensors wont operate.
