Rear Wheel Well Storage?

I did this mod today, the brute force way. Plenty of storage on the driver side and not much on the passenger side if you have a limited, but its extra storage nevertheless. I left the 3 clips in place so they do not rattle at all, thanks again.

:moon: HAHAHA, If I had 1/2 of the "Hackmans" skills id be doing alot more! I forgot all about this simple mod, until today while i was cleaning the truck. It took all of 30 seconds of your Brute force tutorial and out they came. Out of the three remaining clips which one/ones did you snip?

I have a LTD so my passenger side storage bin is out of the question because of the JBL amp. But do we know what the wires are in this shot?

Im thinking of cramming an air compressor in here and need a 12V constant or 12V acc on to tap into relatively close by.
 
Hey- that's my truck! The wires that are covered in clear loom are for my CB. The factory loom feeds the back of the vehicle. Taillights, etc. Some of those wires feed the trailer harness, I'm fairly certain. You should have +12V and +12V ignition in there.

And a mighty fine truck it is!

Excellent, I am now going in search of a compressor small enough to cram in there. I also am going to try and track down some wiring diagrams for the 4Runner so I don't have to go probing all day with a multimeter. Thanks for the help!
 
I did this little mod this past weekend. I also lined them with heavy vulcanized rubber to keep stuff from rattling around.
 
Oldie but a goodie mod, but for some reason I can't breach the space. I have pryed to the point that all the tabs are cleared except the two screws on the in board side. Do I just need to pry a little more and they will break free?

Pardon my Nervous first time modder question!
 
Years later and someone is still doing it...

With this small electric screwdriver I was able to pry up the piece and get to the screws and remove it without breaking any of the tabs. Just need a magnet to grab the screws that inevitably fall below. Don't know if it buys you anything but couldn't bring myself to break it off with brute force on a 3 week old truck ;) Stored jumper cables on one side, and bungees on another.

I pried up the outer side of the pan, stuck a big screwdriver in there to keep it open and used a 1/4" ratchet with a phillips #2 to unscrew the screws. Didn't break any of the tabs off and it pops on and off very secure. Just did the drivers side as I have a LE with JBL.

I ended up undoing one screw and breaking the other. So I glued it all back together.

Then, I snipped a V into the screwholes, and left the screws in. Took a bit of doing to find the right "dept" for the screws, but now they help pressure-fit the thing in place. It's just as solid as it was before.

Anyone know what that unplugged connector is for?

Going to see if I can buy the little "lid" that we take off from Toyota, if it's not that expensive. If so, maybe I'll put a little hinged door on it, and glass/epoxy a little storage bin under it. Or better yet - maybe sink in a couple of those cup-holder ash tray things for some convenient storage. Bell makes a solar powered lighted cup holder ash tray for about $10 on amazon. Cutting a hole in the tray and gluing one in might be pretty handy for holding small items.

Years and years later.. Someone still doing it

In case anyone is curious, 2013 trail edition, non jbl audio, with dc/ac converter, passenger side. I pulled up the outside lid first and was able to unscrew the tabs, no damage. Snaps back in without screws securely.

I was thinking of using the brute force method on the driver side and mounting with screws a mini fire extinguisher and mounting bracket on the top. If fits perfectly in the tray on the top. When snapping back in will it be stable enough since the two side tabs would be broken?
 
Will this work on a 2017 or did they change the design? It's Toyota so I'm sure it's the same from the 1st gen until now..... But in all seriousness, Can you fit a set of jumper cables in here? I don't have any dedicated storage solution in the truck yet and can't bare a set just rattling around... I would love to be able to stash them in here if possible!

If it's a long heavy duty set probably not, but otherwise I bet you can. It will be a little awkward getting in and out though
