Battery change stopped rear window and wiper to stop working

The kid lock and the all the way up button and down button worked for me as was posted.

BTW Toyota installed a recall computer upgrade on my 2004. Be sure to take all your keys as they will have to be reprogrammed. Cost me an additional trip to the dealer. :hatsoff:

Ok. So I searched and searched, but have yet to find anyone that mentions any issue like mine. I replaced my stereo in our 2005 SR5. I disconnected the battery as one should when doing this work and when everything was back together everything seemed fine. Well, it snowed. I attempted to use the rear wiper and nothing happened. No defrost, no wiper, no sprayer...... Cracked the rear window and rolled it up and everything worked. Great! Right?

Well, shut the ignition off and went around back to open the tail gate and it won't open. Get back in vehicle and turn it on. Rear wiper doesn't work again. Window rolls up and down fine. Leave ignition on and go around back and the tail gate opens. Defrost works. Sprayer works. Shut ignition off and turn back on....... Nothing works again.

So I search. I notice my auto window isn't auto anymore and I do the auto window reset procedure. Auto window works again, sprayer, wiper and the tail gate opens too. Shut off ignition and turn it back on. NOTHING!

Window works great. But if I shut off the ignition I can't open the tail gate. The key fob doesn't open the window. The lock doesn't actuate. Etc....... Why the hell does this thing reset every time the ignition is turned off? Can anyone please help. This worked flawlessly before the battery disconnect. Is this a ploy by toyota to drum up service just by disconnecting the battery? I've worked on cars for years and I can't figure this ridiculous mess out! :wacko:

Just had the same thing happen to my 03' 4runner SR5. Two days of completely freaking out til ...I read so much that i started reading between the lines of the repair manuel.

What you need is 2 keys
1 key goes in the ignition and turn it to "ON"
2nd key goes in the rear hatch door using it to work all the functions of the rear door. Do the typical turn and hold down turn hold up etc etc.

Why 2 keys? cause its a safety mechanism as if a child was stuck in the door it will noit come out of that mode until two keys are used assuming two people are verifying everything is ok..and walah

Awesome.Thank you.. rear wiper & washer would not work. I checked the fuse first (2010) inside the cabin..not blown. Googled problem.. took me to this site. Fixed in seconds. Rear window was down ever so slightly. I must have hit the button accidenatlly a few weeks ago? Most appreciative!

Thanks for the info. I just had the sunroof worked on and then the rear wiper/washer didnt work. The rear window wasnt seated all the way up as previous poster said. Now all is well. Thanks again.

Have same problem, and tried the above. Didn't work! Already been to the dealer and of course there it all worked fine. Thankfully I have an honest dealer and they didn't charge anything for the diagnostics. Anyone else have any ideas?

06 Window issues

Hi guys hoping you can help. I have been having problems with my rear window, defroster, wiper and figured I should get it fixed since winter is approaching. My window does not go up and down with any method. The defroster and wiper also do not function. I have tried moving them around in different positions and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

For the past two weeks, my rear window wouldn't go down, the rear defroster wouldn't go on, and the rear wiper and fluid wouldn't work. I check all of the fuses but everything looked ok. I took it to the dealership today, and they told me to try two things:

1. Make sure your rear wiper is in the proper neutral position.

2. Try putting your window up.

The dealer told me that if the window is almost up, but not quite all of the way that it won't go down. If it's not all the way up, the defroster won't work and the wiper won't work because the truck thinks that the window is down.

I went and played with the positioning of the wiper, and then used the button to make sure the window was all the way up (which it seemed to be), and now they all work!

Just wanted to let y'all know how to fix this if you ever have this problem.

What is the trick to do to fix this ? Thank

Same here, no wiper/defroster following a battery replacement. The reset worked perfectly! :girl:

You may have to re-initialize the back window. This problem can also happen if you disconnect the battery.

I have read through here and i am having the same problem nothing on the back window works ( defrost, wiper or window rolling down)! I have moved the wiper around to different positions and I believe it is in the right position. When I hit the button inside to roll the window down I can hear a click and that is it! please help lol

This worked like a charm. I had an alternator and battery replacement and after, the sunroof, rear defrost, rear wiper did not work. My back window would not automatically roll down either.

After reading this thread, I rolled the back window all the way down and then up and held the button in the up position for 10 seconds. This fixed the rear defrost, wiper and the window all in one try.

The sunroof kicked in a day after the alt/battery replacement. At first there was no power to the roof at all. I pulled fuses and none were bad but the next day I had power to the roof. I had to open it and then close it and hold the button in the close position for 10 seconds and it cycled back to normal. Thanks again for the tip!

I had the same thing happend on my 2006 4 runner when i disconnected the battery to replace the radio. There is a step to get this all to work and its in the manual if iam right. you have to zero point the back window for the defroster wiper auto front window and sunroof to work... kind of a stupid setup but after the first time its easy and takes less then a min to do

2000 4runner rear defrost and window work just fine no rear wiper or washer .have attempted to normalize the window several times . no luck I assume.my.next step is to check the harness at the wiper motor itself ? My switch is good as all other functions for front wiper and washer work 100%

Well I can hear the sprayer motor whine when I try to release washer fluid nothing comes out so likely a leak somewhere along the line so nothing from the rear wiper

2005 SR5 Tailgate Lockdown

For about a year, I was having a similar problem with the tailgate as JrAdrock80 described. After disconnecting the battery to replace the stereo I lost wiper/defrost/latch/lock controls. At that time the window would still go up and down, but I needed to reset the top point every time I wanted to open the tailgate. Nothing would function without the ignition in the ON position and the top-point reset.
A few months ago, the window stopped functioning. The backup camera that I installed requires power from the rear tailgate and it works just fine... just nothing else on the tailgate.
-I tried the 2 key thing that Oneluv13TR4 described... with no luck
-I put a 12V power supply to the rear window motor... and it functions as it should
-I tried getting the wiper back to proper neutral position... with no result

Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated

Finally figured it out......... It wasn't in lock down, it was a bad wire in the hatch harness. The blue/red power wire was broken in the hatch rail on the side of the hatch. I found a thread by pure luck and someone else had the same problem as me. I soldered in a small length of wire to fix the broken wire and now my hatch is FULLY functional again.

If it wasn't for that random find I would have pulled my hair out trying to figure this problem out. I still cant believe it is fixed at this point. :reddance:

Turning the key in the back hatch works as well as the key fob. I have put them window up and down several times, but still not resetting anything.

Thoughts or something else I can do? Am I dealer bound?

Same question. It seems like no defroster is "better' becuase it's just the initialization. Anyone have any luck getting the wiper/motor running who did have rear defrost?

Sounds like the issue that I finally figured out. Its a wiring issue in the hatch.

Get a multimeter and take the panel off of the rear hatch. On the body ECM there is a blue connector. Disconnect the blue connector and probe the solid blue wire. This should be 12 volts with the ignition off. Next probe the blue/red wire and this wire should also be 12 volts with the ignition off

If both are 0 volts, then it's the wiring in the hatch. You can pull the boot off between the hatch and the body of the 4runner at the top left of the hatch opening. When you expose the wires, you should see the solid blue and the blue/red wire. You can use a sharp probe or a needle to pierce the wires and check the voltage. If both are 12 volts at the top of the hatch, you have a bad wire or wires inside the hatch. You will need to find where the wire is bad and splice in some new wire. Or you can splice at the top of the hatch and run a new wire down to the connector.

I noticed my PO applied some sort of sealant over the boot(presumably it was cracking?). Is there a way to remove and replace this boot without hating myself?
