Rear window jammed (mechanical?)

Hi all,

New here....daughter just purchased a '92 and while the drive train seems to be in good shape, there are some other issues that are up to Dad to resolve.

The rear window was "sticky" when she bought it and I promised to take it apart this weekend to give it a general cleanup and lube, then see how it operated.

It would operate and drop some but it sounded like trying to force the motor to drive it down might burn it up. Anyway, this a.m. when I try to get it started down so I can help it the rest of the way, the motor cranked right up and ran w/o resistance....but NO movement of the glass. It seems as though the motor drive has parted ways with the regulator assembly. I'm assuming that the gear finally came apart. Fair enough, I'll deal with that in due time.

Now the problem is that mechanically the window or regulator appears to be jammed. No amount of pulling on the glass with rubber gloves, or trying to pry on the regulator arms or gears can make it budge...it's like it's bolted in to position. I figure that if the motor runs full speed with the key turned (either direction) it can't be the motor keeping the glass in position and must be a mechanical jam or a locking mechanism that I can't find.

Is there a locking mechanism that sets when the window reaches the top? If not, what could be causing this lockup? I can't do anything w/o getting the glass down so I can open the gate and I've got my daughter hanging on my every move. :(

Also should add that the motor runs both directions from the key switch on the gate and the console switch. Yay. :/

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Have you taken the tailgate apart to see how everything looks? Maybe you have a couple of broken teeth on the window part.

Pull the motor complely off. the motor is a worm drive. u might have striped the gears. thw glass assy, and the regulator arms should be free to come down.

And you have to do all those from inside the back side with back gate still closed. I would put the back seats down and get ready to lay on your belly..

Forgot to mention, I removed the carpeted piece but couldn't get the top trim piece off. With the window up all the way it's hard to see if it should come off or if there are more screws still installed (removed everything I could see.

Most of the mechanism looks fine. Pretty rusty where the glass is supported but intact and everything else looks fine. It moved a couple of days ago but acts as though it's completely locked up now...won't budge even if I pry on the gears and yank on the arms. It just feels mechanically jammed....since the motor runs it can't be the motor hanging it up so I'm pretty lost for an explanation unless the motor drive gears are jamming the works up.

Oh yeah....how does the motor come off and can you get to it with the gate closed? Wasn't readily apparent to me from laying on my belly, back, or side!
