Rear Window problem > '91 4Runner.

I just purchased a 1991 Toyota 4Runner (4x4, 5sp, 22r), so far this is an awesome truck. My first toyota and it has over 252K miles. The guy I purchased it from had a few parts missing including the center console with all the switches (including the rear power window switch).

Problem: I'm pretty sure the key hole in the tailgate would move the window up or down but I'm getting nothing. At this point the rear window is stuck halfway down..

What I've tried: I jumped power to the rear window motor thinking I could get the window up since winter is getting close and my window is stuck half way down. I removed the regulator and motor from the tailgate so I could swap out the motor for the L/R door window motor. I made sure the motor was working on the L/R door first. I removed the motor and regulator and test the rear tailgate window motor and it works! I then found out that the door switch needs to be plugged in for the motor to work, so I though maybe the open connector up front for the rear window switch is causing the rear window motor not to work. I toned out the switch on the L/R door and found two pairs of contacts that are normally closed. As an experiment I removed the switch from the L/R door and looped the two contact pairs that are suppose to be closed, I test it at the front drivers door control for the L/R and it works! So I tried looping the same for the connector that plugs into the rear window switch and got nothing by turning the key.

Question: with the rear window switch missing... How can I get the window up and down??:redbrick:

One more question... I can open the tailgate from the inside handle... Is there any other way to open the rear tailgate? There is no handle on the outside and turning the key in either direction doesn't seem to do anything. Plus I'm only getting about 45 degree turn center to left and 45 degree turn center to right.

As far as all the swithching of electronics... you have me on that one. I can say that I would find a center console with a switch and try that.

The other thing I would look at is the key that he gave you with the truck. Your truck would have come originally with a valet key that will open the drivers door and start the truck but it will NOT work on the rear window or the passenger door. IF this is a key issue then your local Toyota dealer can, with your vin number, make you a set of keys that will work on all of the locks.

If this is an open loop electronics issue I am not sure. What color is your interior? I have part of a console in my shop that may have a switch in it. Tan. I would have to look though.

I don't have much experience with electronics so I will defer to others one that one. But I can help with your second question about the tailgate latch and key turn.
No, there is no other way to unlatch the tailgate than by using the latch on the inside. Toyota designed it this way so you couldn't pull down the tailgate with the window partially up (which would snap the window and ruin your day). It makes sense, but is a pain if you can't get your window down.
When you get your window straightened out you will see that the only way you can unlock the tailgate is after the window is completely down, and that it will automatically lock itself as soon as you start to roll up the window.
As for the key, about 45 degree to the right and left of center sounds about right. Remember that unlike in a mechanical lock where the key rotates 180 degrees or more as it turns a lock cylinder, in this case your key is only actvating an electronic switch to move the window up or down and so very little movement is required.

I rigged the rear window to work by wiring the rear window motor from the L/R door window switch (two pin connector). Now when I use the L/R window switch control from the drivers door master switch control the rear window rolls up and down. I hid the wires and it works/looks great. Now I know that the rear wiper actually works.

I ordered a few junk yard parts online: Center console with NO switches (they don't have any of these switches). I have a 5sp manual, If anyone can help me find these switches I can paypal money to have them shipped. I also ordered the drivers seatbelt (male and famale), and the intake tube (rubber section was taped up). I have blue interior by the way. I also need the A/C switch that goes in the dash (it's a square hole with a female connector in the hole).

I got this truck because I've heard great things about these 4Runners (5sp manual, 22r 4cyl, 4X4). I paid only 2k but it has tons of miles on it. I am mechanically inclined and slightly OCD. I planned on having a junker to save money as a cheap commuter, but I'm finding myself putting more money into it. New tires, new battery, replacing interior parts, working on cosmetics, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the key thing (I got two keys, so worn out that I can start the truck and take the key out with it still running). I disabled the auto lock on the tailgate because my window was stuck halfway up and I couldn't get it open even though It would clear the seal/track on the body.

I have a 95 SR5 (5spd, 4wd, 22re) and there are two switches in the console between the seats: one for the rear window, and a second one that's labeled "window lock" that deactivates the up/down switch. Maybe yours was in the "lock" position when the console was removed. Just a thought. Good luck on a sweet vehicle.

^^^ GREAT job thinking outside the box... I wonder if that window lock affects the manual key window rolling...

Thanks for the tips and good brainstorming. I'm sure it will all work as it should once all the switches are put back in their proper places. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can find these switches?

Switches I need:
both center console switches/buttons (rear window and window lock).
Dash button/ switch by climate controls (I think it's for the A/C, a square hole in dash).

Classified's, people are always parting out 4runners. Check many boards, you are bound to find something you need. Pick and Pull salvage yards are hit and miss but sometimes you can find what you need.
