Another thing my friend said I needed was a rear window regulator. He said it is 140 bucks. I think he means the rear window motor. When switched on I hear it running but the window won't move or only a very short distance. I tried to buy a new window motor today but mine was made before 4/1989 it was made 1/89 so it is a different motor twice as expensive and of course unavailable. I saw another forum where guys where switching in rear window motors and just retaining the factory wire plugs. I am thinking this is the cheapest strongest fix. It is supposed to be a lot faster than a factory rear window motor. Is there a chance the Regulator/linkage itself is hosed? I found a used one online but it seems pretty strange that it is broken since it all looks pretty solid. Thanks for the help I am new to 4runners.

your friend is correct you need the regulator more than likely. it is what the motor hooks to and moves the window up and down if the gears in the regulator are stripped you have no up or down or very little.you should probably be able to come by a new or used one

cant hurt to put a new motor in with the new regulator
My 4runner is a pre April. I found one person offering a new Regulator. It is 190 bucks for a post April and 400 for a Pre April. Man I always seem to pick the difficult stuff. Tried to buy an Effluent hose for the washer and it was non standard 40 bucks online. Had to get a down draft set for my Jennair cooktop. The pipe is non standard have to buy the kit from Jennair. Story of my life I guess.

Have you taken apart the tailgate and seen if that's what you even need?
I thought with the first gen's it was common for the glass to get out of the tracks or something like that. Either way, figure out what the problem is first. If the geared part of the regulator is stripped, then you can think about buying a new one or putting in a used one. Personally if it lasted 25 years, and you found one in good shape, it seems like a used one would be just fine.
On my 2nd gen the tailgate window was slow rising when it was cold. I put in a newer motor, but it wasn't much better. But after spraying silicone on all the tracks in the tailgate and gaskets on the truck, and cleaning the window inside and out, it does pretty darn well. You might try that too, making sure there aren't any pebbles, sand, or wood chunks jammed in there too.
I am laid up right now so I asked my mechanic to look at it while he was getting it ready for inspection. He said it needed a Regulator. I ordered a motor first so it will probably get both new. I am now debating getting the soft topper for it and having him roll down the back window manually and worrying about it in winter. The problem is my truck was made pre-April. I would hate to buy a used one and have it not fit. For a few hundred more I will probably order the new one if it will fit. The parts guy needs the vin to confirm it will fit.
