Rear wiper/washer suddenly not working

I tried to use the rear wiper/washer today and discovered it is not working. Nothing happens when I turn the switch on the lever. Front wipers/washer still works fine.

Could this be something simple like a blown fuse, that I can find and replace myself? Or is it more likely to be a bigger problem such as a bad switch?

I'm leaving next week for my annual Nevada ghost town trip so I have limited time to try taking it in to the dealer.

Also check washer fluid level. Mine did the same with the fronts still working. Topped off the tank and tried it a few times and it worked after the 5-6 time trying for about tens seconds each. I think it has to do with where the pick up is in the tank for the rear washer pump.

That happened to me last winter. I was about to loose my mind until after a day or so I decided to check the window. Yup, it was just barely down.

Bingo!!!

Normally I never put the rear window down, so didn't even think about that. But a couple weeks ago, I had to transport my brother's cat, and it spewed crap all over the inside of the carrier as soon as the 4Runner started moving. I was never so happy to be able to roll down that rear window! I thought I got it up all the way afterwards, but apparently not.

Yes, this is a bigger problem than fuses or bad switches - user error!

From the owner's manual "Before operating the rear window wiper and washer switch, make sure the back window is completely closed."

Even before I joined this forum, its being amazingly useful to me. Last night yes, my rear wiper did not work (2007 4Runner SR5 V6). I thought I would spend a day today disassembling crap, checking and changing fuses, but decided to look at this forum first and BINGO! You all had the solution to my problem. Slid the rear window down all the way and then back up all the way... As you probably already read, that fixes the rear wiper!!! I wish I knew where that rear window switch is in case it breaks someday. Thanks everybody!!!

Thanks guys for this info. I was going to ask what could be causing my 2013 rear wiper from working. I thought it may have been a blown fuse. Sure enough it was the window not being completely closed, even though it looked like it was.

Last weekend I had this problem, and did a google search and this thread was one of the first results.

Same problem and solution.

Annoyingly enough, I left all my windows slightly cracked to air out the car after getting it wet/muddy and kinda smelly after duck hunting. Must have not pulled the switch all the way up. Anyways, for 2 or 3 days, I was wondering why the **** I was getting so much dust in my car. Then this happened, and I realized that I had been sucking all the dirt off my rear (from driving on dirt roads) into the car through the small open window.

This exact same issue just caused an argument with me and my wife a few weeks ago. She drives it all the time, we went out to eat and it was raining. I tried to use the wiper and nothing. She reaches over to turn on the wiper like I was too stupid to know how to use it. :der: and it does nothing. There was about a 30 sec pause and she raises the rear window. Then proceeds to blame me for hitting the button. I had not touched the rear window!!! I never let it down but she does. :argue: I finally just said whatever and turned the radio up. :vader:

It needs its own window lock. I, too, went nuts trying to figure it out, and since then I still bump the switch from time to time inadvertently.

Same here.. thank you very much. I was driving home the other night and tried to use my rear window wiper and nothing.. got home, checked the fuses and everything looked good. Was going to take it to the local Toyota dealership this week when I googled the issue and found this page... I'll be darned.. just rolled the window down a bit, then back up all the way and rear wiper and washer both worked like a charm... so thank you again.

My back wiper stopped working a while back and I had just forgotten about it when I took it to the dealer for an oil change. Well after I got it back after the oil change, I tried the wiper a few days later and it was working. I was thinking how great it was the dealer had fixed it for free. So it turns out they just rolled the back window all the way up. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I found this post. :lol:
