Rearview camera mod WITH NAV

I have my setup wired in exactly the same way as in the diagram above - with Pole 1 being the NAV unit side. However, when I push my rear camera switch my reverse lights come on?!?! I thought that the diode prevented this signal from energizing that end of the circuit. And that by putting 12 Volts to the NAV unit you only would activate the screen/camera not the reverse lights. Can anyone explain? I even tested the diode prior to installation.

 
Does this mod work on 2015 trail premium with the Entune ? And how would you activate the rearview camera without putting it in reverse.

The latest diagram available (from Mitchell) is 2014, but there are no substantial electrical changes from what I can find. The Trail and Limited wiring are much the same as well. On page one; see the blue circle and two arrows 'in pen'. What I would do is by-pass the shifter inter-lock circuit by connecting the switch between the GREEN and RED wires. This will achieve the same thing as the shifter does when activating the circuit; it looks like you'll be able to initiate the rear view camera at anytime doing this. Give it a test and let us know!

PS: You don't need to sever/cut the wires to test, just 'skin' them and use a jumper to test it!



You need do nothing with the lower diagram, this is just to show the complete navi-cam scheme.

Did you check to see if the diode is facing the correct direction... if backwards, it should do exactly what you are describing...

[MENTION=112391]Stillbreathn[/MENTION] , the switch you posted above will work but it is a SPST so you will require the diode (which you seem to already know). I have mine running a SPST switch w/ diode and it works perfect, reverse lights do not come on, can leave it running for extended periods at speed and never had any sort of error codes (had it on for a 1hr drive this weekend as I was leery of my new bike rack)

However, If I understand the wiring of the switch you posted you don't have the wiring correct, see below for my understanding of it

At the switch:
Red goes to Accessory positive , this would be your red wire on the nav plug to activate the camera
Green goes to a +12v power source for the switch, this could be the blue wire on the nav plug or you can tie in from any other +`12v source.
Black is the ground for the switch and can go anywhere that is grounded to the body (generally just find a bolt head behind the nav stack somewhere.

I double checked direction during the install. If you look close in the pic that I posted, you can see the dark strip on diode facing the correct side of the circuit. ???????

Can the heat from soldering mess with the diode??? I checked the thing 3 times prior to installation!?!?!?!

Aww SH^%$&T I think that I just found the issue!!!

I got a Zener diode as posted by this post....
Been there several times, good place. I was around a radio shack today though in bel air and picked up a pack of 2 12V Diodes (specifically they are radio shack brand, model lN4742A - 12V Zener Diode) for $1.50. Wired it in just like in my diagram (paying close attention to the direction it was facing of course) and BAM. it works perfectly.

I have not confirmed this as the true problem yet but, I think that it might be the issue so, you might not want to get this diode. Well, if you don't want the reverse lights to come on... I have not had any other issues. But, I will be replacing with a regular diode. Although, I do get the tailgaters to back off when i give them some reverse lights doing 80 on the highway!!!

A Zener Diode is a special kind of diode which permits current to flow in the forward direction as normal, but will also allow it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value - the breakdown voltage known as the Zener voltage.

Its on the internet so it must be true...What is a Zener Diode - Electric Circuit

Question: If you were to simply energize the REV (for reverse) terminal on the HU's rear panel, wouldn't that eliminate the need for the diode; the back-up lights are on a totally different (independent) circuit(?)... "See the navi wiring diagram posted earlier, pg one, #2 terminal, RED wire": 'I'm not quite sure where you're tying in your switch...

This is the red wire that supplied 12 Volts to the NAV when shifting the transmission into reverse and hence the wire I tied into.



~0 Volts in park and all other positions. (hard to see on the meter in this pic)


~12 Volts in reverse ( still hard to see...)

Okay Good! So why not just energize that terminal with an 'AOB" or 'Slee off-road' factory style dash switch... 'BANG'!

Rigtec, I believe that just energizing the terminal is being done when using a SPST Switch. However, I am guessing that red wire cannot be energized while the 4runner is in motion. If the wire is energized while in motion then it seems people are getting symptoms like the reverse lights coming on or a variety of other lights. This is why the power supplied to the Nav. Unit must be isolated via a Diode when using a SPST switch or by using a SPDT switch.

By the way, I am doing this on my 2014 Limited. I'll let you know how it goes. I looked up the wiring and Terminals of the ECU for the navigation system on TIS. The reverse wire is Pin 1 on G37 and ignition wire is Pin 3 on G37.
 
Ok, got through all 11 pages. This mod is next on my list. I've got a factory looking switch and was hoping to put it behind the shifter in one of the unused seat warmer spots. I was figuring on tying into the reverse switch by the shifter and not touch the navigation unit at all.
But now you guys have me thinking. I'd love to have auxiliary inputs for more cameras/phone/whatever. That means I have to dig into the dash, huh?
Also, what's wrong with having reverse lights come on?

I have developed a dongle that I am finishing up testing on for this. The dongle will PLUG directly into the back of the screen and then the exisitng wire plugs into the dongle. There is no cutting of the factory wires required. I am am also working on building auxillary video input into the dongle as well. I am hoping to have it wrapped up within a month and will make more (for a small price :bluejump:) if anyone is interested.

Even though I read this whole thread and a few others, will your dongle fit across a wide array of trim levels? That is awesome if you pull it off. You might make some serious bank. How much HP do you think it will increase?

It should be universal for 5th gens with backup camera on the nav screen. I will need testers with different models for this when the time comes.

Dongle will add about 25 HP at the wheels. Limited edition models with all red wire may be offered at one point which will give you about 150 extra ponies.
