Reasonable Garage Clearance

While I was installing my RRO Adventure Rack last night I started thinking about the available clearance in my garage. A quick measurement showed that I had about 6.5in between the the rack and the garage door opener. I have a stock SR5 on OEM tires. The plan was to do an Icon Stage 1 and possibly 285 duratracs. My question is what is the minimum clearance I should leave? I jokingly told my fiancee that we could always air down at night to squeak it in and all I got was "The Look."

Depends on you actually, but I would not want to have less than six.

As long as you don't scrape the rack on the garage door, there is no minimun. My FJC had about a hairs clearance with 3" lift, 34" tires and a Baja Rack.

Cut out a trench in the floor for each wheel so the 4Runner drops down as it enters the garage. you wont need any tennis ball or tape on the wall to tell you where to stop at

It will make it easier to enter the vehicle when it is in the garage.

By the time I'm done with everything (tires, lift and rack) I expect to clear the door by about 2" as I enter and exit the garage. The opener will have close to 6" since the track takes the door higher than the opening. The only problem with this is that when loading up for a trip, I have to do it outside and remember to unload outside when I come home. I also have to remember to lower the ham antenna before pulling into the garage. Not a big issue since I'm using a Diamond K9000 motorized mounting system, assuming I remember to hit the switch to tip it down.

BTW - I have destroyed two antennas on my old Explorer by forgetting to lower the antenna before entering the garage but the mount held up.
