I got one new NAPA Maxdrive CV for $88 with NO CORE deposit. The reman. ones are like $20 cheaper but you have to return your old one, it is an extra $110 if you don't. Only makes sense to get the new and keep the old. The reman. axles only have a 3 year warranty while the new have a life time. Can't beat that deal with a stick.
 
I bought the Napa CV boot kit and the boots seem to be very good quality. Better than the EMPI branded boots from a parts store I used before, which felt thin and is already developing micro cracks in the creases after a year.

The only thing to keep in mind is that these aftermarket kits never come with enough grease. Toyota's spec as per the service manual calls for about 2-3x the amount of grease supplied. Each tube supplied is only about 90 g, and they give you one tube per boot.

I recently rebooted my inners, as they had started to rip. I used Beck Arnley boots and Redline CV grease. The boots were reasonably priced but very good quality compared to some of the part's store junk boots I've seen over the years. And you can't go wrong with Redline grease made specifically for CV shafts, though it isn't cheap.

Thanks for your suggestion. I ordered some Redline CV grease for the job. I do a fair amount of offroading so I want to take care of the key components.

Thanks for this write up! I wasn't exactly sure which tools to purchase until I read this thread. For anyone else wondering, these tools are NOT sold at my local SEARS store.

14 oz = 400 grams.

Toyota spec is 255 - 265g inner joint, 176 - 186g outer joint per axle. So technically one 14oz tub can't even do one axle. But I doubt CV joints are that picky with a shortage of 30-50g of grease. You should be fine with two tubs. Or get three to be exact.

As long as you don't use only one of those dinky 100g tubes/sackets of grease per joint as recommended by these aftermarket boot kits then it should be fine.

Off topic but your 4runner is awesome. Gonna have to keep an eye out for it when i am driving around town
 
Couple of notes:

1) Today the hubby rebooted the 99's right cv shaft. It's the regular oe add version. From that experience I wanted to note that the
Toyota #04438-35060 CV reboot kit (that comes with everything to reboot one shaft)
does NOT require the use of this mentioned tool:

The oetiker clamp tool is still needed for the outer boot but the inner boot clamps can be closed by hand and use a pliers to fold the keepers over.

2) Another note for those of you with the manual hub conversion: The c-clip is there, it's hiding under the tripod. Move the tripod to find the clip.

Everything else is just as the write-up here describes other than the need for the Amazon clamp tool if using the Toyota cv boot kit (part number for the manual shaft 04438-04021 is different from the a.d.d. 04438-35060 part kit).

I had a friend that worked for Advanced Auto.. He would help me out. Supposedly they were catching on though cus I was bringing in so many. Apparently you're only suppose to warranty the first one ??

Oh well, I got a good 5 or 6 out of it. Now I just hunt for them used when I need a spare. I have 4 spares currently, 2 that are OEM.

So I have a question regarding the NAPA CVs, with the lifetime warranty, they will replace them at no cost once the CV fails? Bonus question, I see online that they have a right and left CV axle, is there actually a right and left or is it the same?

They replaced two of mine at no cost when the boots ripped. Both of them are the same, and had the same part numbers on the boxes.
