recharging AC on 92 with 3.0 L

I need to recharge the air conditioning on my 92 4runner with the 3.0 motor. I see two charging ports one black and one red. I'm guessing that I need to use the black port. Can anyone out there give me some insight into this and tell me which one is the low pressure side?

Also, does the 92 use R12 or R134??

Finally, if it uses R12 does is make sense to convert to R134???

It uses R12, unless it's already been converted. You'll prolly have to get a certified A/C tech to do the recharge, since I don't think you can get R12 over the counter, nowadays.

I have recently heard thru another board that even the R134 systems are being phased out. This is supposedly because they, too, damage the ozone layer of the atmosphere. There appears to be a 'new' substance coming on the market. This new system is said to run at very high pressures-- on the order of 2000 psi. I'd just recharge and wait on converting.

follow-up to AC recharge on 92 w/ 3.0L

I just went to a reputable A/C mechanic (took several weeks to find one) who just added a pound of R12. Total cost for freon and labor was $86.00 He indicated that the conversion to R134 is not a good idea for 2nd generation 4runners that use R12 b/c the R134 is a higher pressure refrigerant and that his experience has generally been that the conversions do not work very well.

It's blowing nice and cold now, so we'll see how long it lasts. At $86.00 a pound, I hope it lasts for a while!

I recharged, also,, last year. Unless there is a BIG leak,, recharging is the way to go.

I have a 92 and the previous owner had converted the A/C to R134. I found this out when I went to have it recharged and the mechanic told me it had been converted. So he put in 2 lbs of R134 and told me it probaly won't get as cold as the R12. He is right, I also have a 90 and the A/C gets much colder and it still runs the R12.

I would not convert, just recharged with R12.
