Reduce Reuse Recycle

So. I need to do my valve cover gasket pretty badly. You can see fresh oil on the top side of the exhaust manifold on my 3rz.

Valve cover gasket job hopefully shouldn't take more than an hour ( I hope) . I need a valve adjustment as I am getting a moderate valve tap which I think this is partially due to oil loss from the valve cover. Top off the oil and the tap is definitely deadened.

If I do the valve cover gasket, check clearances, then button her back up so I can buy the shims I would need. I cannot be down for more than a Day, well, I don't want to that is. Do you think I would need to replace the valve cover gasket again or Should I just buy two gaskets? Thanks!

I think the tap is normal. It's like TOYOTA TAP

The way I understand what you are asking is that you need to do this work in two phases?

Phase 1 Adjust valves and replace VCG with new and close her up.
Pase 2 Shim/adjust to reduce tap and then closer her up again?

I think you should be able to reuse no problem. The gaskets are rubber(ish) and not the old cork kind.

Phase 1 - Replace VCG and other seals ( spark plug & washer), check and document valve clearances

Phase 2 - Open back up and replace required shims to get everything back in tolerance then close her back up.

I cannot ( do not want to ) have my DD down for more than a Day or Weekend because, well, it sucks not having two cars and working 30 minutes away.

I was thinking it would be okay to re-use for that same reason, I thought they were a type of rubber. Rock ON! :guitar2:
