Reliabilty

I have a 2014 4Runner Limited which I bought new in 2013. I financed for 7 years. I'm almost at 31K miles. My question is regarding reliability of the 4Runner? Normally, I would trade in when the warranty ran out (American made cars). Do you think the 4Runner will have many repair bills after the warranty ends? Should I hold on to it or trade when I hit 36K?

Google "2014 4Runner reliability"

Yeah it's reliable.

Your're hosed, definitely going to explode at 32k, I'll take it off your hands for a reasonable 5 large. :)

Resale value as a % of purchase price is a good proxy for reliability. You'll be ok.

I'm getting a 2017 4Runner limited before the new 3.5 gets swapped in it, Heard the Tacoma guys are not to happy with that engine.

My '05 sport edition just turned 12 years old this month. Other than basic, routine maintenance, it's been a flawless performer and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country tomorrow. I have a '17 on order because I'm selfish, I want another 4.0L/5speed combo before they disappear forever. With proper care and maintenance, these rigs will go 15-20 years IMO.......shhhh, don't tell anyone!

Just realize that "Reliability" does not mean "doesn't need service".

You're gonna see your biggest bill for service around 90~100k, that's when most of the services kick in.

i.e. First Coolant Service for SLLC (Super Long Life Coolant) is 10yr/100k, after that it's 5yr/50k. You should have a transmission service done around 100k (not gonna fill up this thread with why, but it's NOT "lifetime fluid" like Toyota likes to pretend). Spark plugs are due around 100k or 120k (I forget which, but usually most Iridium plugs are recommended around there).

Every 30k would be ideal for 4WD service (i.e. front & rear differentials and transfer case fluids), at our dealership we recommend an EFI service every 60k (but if you just toss a can of Seafoam or a similar product every oil change interval you should be fine).

But in terms of major issues, they hold up well and I wouldn't be too concerned about it falling apart on you. :)

My 2014 Limited (bought 31 Jan 2014) just turned over 82,000 miles. Lots of road time-some snow and mud. Absolutely no problems. 4Runner reliability isn't something to worry about.

Cheers,
Dave

Wranglers have very good resale values. I just traded in a 2015 for around 3k less than I paid for it.
Damn. I hate your profile pic. I always think that's some bug crawling around and nearly drops my phone, everytime!!! lol hahaha

Put 75k in 2 years on my 2011 and have 40k on my 2015.... not a single issue to report! Even my original brakes were still good at 75k

How long is a piece of rope?

another thing i just thought about: if you are really financing vehicles for 7 years and then trading them in every few years you should really check to see if leasing is a better option financially for you.

the downside of leasing is that you are always making a payment and never really own anything, but that is what you are doing with your setup. the advantage of leasing is the payments are much lower.

i can't say for sure if it will work out to cost less, it might not, but i think there is a good chance 3 year leases might be less expensive for you

One of the main reasons most of us, including myself, buy 4runners are for reliability. I'm on my 3rd 4Runner in a row. My first was a 94 SR5 that I took up to 210K. Aside from regular maintenance.. the only thing I ever HAD to do was change out an alternator and battery. My second was a 2004 SR5 that I drove until it has 160K. The only issue I ever had was having to replace a wheel bearing!

Guess what I drive now... Yup! Another 4Runner.. And I'm planning to go to at least 200K in it!
