Yup, I took my old car to have XM installed and the guys forgot to hook my regular antenna back up, they damaged my headliner, and left their smudgy hand prints all over it too...

i just had a VIPER 4203 remote start installed, also a "PKALL Bypass Platform" was on my bill....local custom-shop guy ive used for 10+ years...total was $359+tax.
i have a 2010 SR5 with regular 'key' (not push-to-start)
i had called two dealers..both quotes for factory install were ~$725...i was not aware opening the door killed the engine with factory starter..that would be unacceptable to me.
the Viper 4203 has a Very, Very Tiny one-button fob...i press once to start (can be set-up for 2-button presses to start, so u dont bump it accidentally)...i get a visual led/lights and audio beeps on the fob response that the signal got to the vehicle...the vehicle parking lights flash and stay on too....i use the same fob button and press once again...to unlock the doors (if they were locked)
i agree you need an installer with good reputation...but, note on another thread on here..a guy had a nightmare with dealer, hack job...totally broke his steering column cover..and the repair made it look worse even.
i believe Viper uses "authorized dealers" only too...tho im not sure how that would be enforced in reality.
i will say...since anyone installing...has to tear into the steering column...you may have evidence of this..i dont see a way around it..i noticed small 'pry' marks on my column..mostly covered by the wheel itself..you would REALLY have to be looking for them..to even notice...its worth the trade-off for the remote starter..in my opinion

I got the alarm and remote start installed for $350. There is actually a third party who does the alarm and remote start installs (near where I live at least) for the dealerships. I have a friedn that works at the dealer who got me in contact with one of their installers and I was able to get him to do the install as a side job.

Whichever remote start you choose, be very careful. We just had two friends killed locally because the car was accidentally started in the garage while the guy was undressing for bed. They did not realize the engine had been started and the carbon monoxide killed them while they slept.

Oh my, that is horrible. I am sorry to hear that. Did they have a factory Toyota remote start or some other vehicle or remote starter? I think the Toyota ones kill the engine after a fairly short time period. How long does a vehicle have to run in the garage before the carbon monoxide gets deadly? guess that depends on a lot of factors with the house's construction, floor plan, weatherstripping, insulation, etc. Good reason to install CMDs in the house...

For the owners with an Aftermarket system, I just had an avital system installed by a shop. Works well, starts truck. Use remote button to open doors and then insert key. Only shuts off if brake is applied. On my way home today, I noticed that the security light is flashing. Is this normal? I looked in the Owner's manual and it says that this light flashes when vehicle is entered in a way other than the remote. Thanks Brian

I have aftermarket..and my security light does not flash when the key is in the ignition and im driving.
When i had mine installed, they required me to bring BOTH of my keys to the install...i assume they use them to program something...i was given both keys back ...so there was not a key stored in the vehicle permanently (as ive read some installs required)
i would definitely ask your installer what is going on with the security light...Avital is made by the same company as Viper, which i have.
That is a shame...Ive had various aftermarket remote starts over the years...all of them had adjustable/programmed default run-times...after which the engine shut off, if the key is not inserted...usually between 12 to 20 minutes.
i also wonder how long it would have to run for it to become dangerous.

The installer most likely did not hook up a wire to the security light. Every system is different as to what color wire it is. When I did mine, I had to figure out which wire on the security light I should tap into and actually had it backwards at first...not a huge deal but should definitely be fixed. Does your factory alarm still work correctly?
today my dealer installed a Viper 4203 (responder one) in my 2011 SR5 truck. i noticed that when I start the truck remotely then get in and insert they key... the security red light (anti theft deterrent system) does not go off... it keeps flashing even when i drive .... is that normal?
the problem is resolved. i took the car back to the dealer and they had to tap a wire in order to turn the security light off. now everything works just fine....

It is possible (and not that difficult) Basically you just need to let them know that you want that ability before install, and they will program one of the Aux. buttons to do so. However, it will be a little bit more $ for parts and labor but it should not be much. This is not just specific to this brand or model, most of the top selling manufacturer's can do this as well. There are an array of options that you can do with these things. For instance, my 2 way remote that is on my keychain will display the interior temp. of the vehicle, allows me to turn on the rear defogger, and turn on the heated seats. They can also be controlled via my phone...
that is beautiful. i dont have any of these features. actually my Toyota dealer is a complete piece of s* . they cheated me. I asked for TOYOTA remote engine start and they installed the CHEAPEST viper model (it is $110 on amazon) and they charged me $500....
anyways, i accepted because their technicians are very ignorant and stupid (i did not want them to install another one... they find the correct wire by "trial and error",,, it seems they never heard of schematic and circuit diagrams....) also because of the many problems associated with the Toyota remote starters.
They should have told me about the model they were planning to install in my brand new car. they did not.... they just installed the cheapest they could get. they also never gave me any other options even if i need to pay extra $..... typical stealership ! !

I just bought a new 2011 TE. I am looking to add a remote start setup, which I know will be fairly trivial for the local shop. But I have a few items on my wish list that I'm not sure any system can accommodate, so i thought i would ask.
I would like to retain the original Toyota key/fob as well as use the iPhone to remote start, lock and unlock doors, roll down and up windows, etc.
Basically i would like the new system to compliment the original factory system not replace it. The 4Runner already has a factory alarm. I guess if i have to bypass that, then that's fine, but I'm still set on having both the factory key/fob work as well as the Phone app.
I don't want to carry another fob.
I don't want use the phone only.
I don't want the fob only.
I want the factory fob/key functions unchanged + the added functions of the Phone app including remote start, lock/unlock and windows up/down.
I've been looking at the drone mobile and I like the features, but..........it seems I have to choose one system or the other. Either factory fob to lock and unlock or the Phone.
It seems my choices exclude one system or the other.
If I install a drone mobile setup and i use the factory key/fob to unlock the doors, i will set off the drone mobile alarm. Plus I will also have to have a 2nd fob or use my Phone every time i want to enter the car.
I guess I could ditch the factory fob/key and use a valet key and Phone for everything else? I guess that might work. Still not ideal. Then anyone using the vehicle has to have the app installed on their phone. Because just using a valet key to unlock a door should probably set off the alarm. For all intents and purposes that would be no different then hammering a screw driver in the lock and turning it
Any ideas? Does what I'm asking for make sense? or am I crazy asking for too much?
