I am also looking to get a OEM Toyota remote start installed in my limited 4runner equipped with the push start and the smart key. The dealer states that the range would be limited to 25-30 feet. Even for a factory remote this range seems pretty limited. I have read that other members are getting decent range from their factory remote starters. Would i be right to assume that the range would be the same as the unlock/lock feature on my smart key.

It sounds reasonable to me. I don't know why it would be any different, except for that I would assume a new module(s) of some kind is being added to the rig. If that new module somehow does have as good of reception or in some way interferes with the current reception. Or maybe its just a flat out safety feature? To prevent accidental starts? But they could easily have incorporated a timer of some sort to shut it all down after a reasonable period of time if no one ever inserted a key or whatever.
As cool as having a smart phone app that can do all of this is, I'm probably going to go with the OEM option as well. I just can't see duplicating pre-existing functionality (alarm, lock/unlock) and then being stuck with some crazy assortment of a phone, extra fobs, keys, factory key/fobs. It supposed to be easier and simpler, not make extra work out of everything.
I guess no one has the all inclusive solution that I'm looking for.

For what it's worth, I have a 2011 Limited w/ factory remote start. I've had it since NOV '10. For my application, it's been a disappointment and wasted $$.
I can confirm that the range for mine is the same as the key unlock, BUT, just like rolling down the windows from a distance, you have to have a constant signal link with the truck for 10 seconds or so. My experience is that if I'm at the max range of the key unlock, I might get a connection for a second or two and the truck unlocks, but the signal won't maintain connection long enough for the truck to do the follow on function (be it rolling down the windows or starting the truck). For either of these actions, I do have to be about 40' or so away (give or take a little ---never used a tape measure on it) so that the signal connection between the fob and the truck maintains connection.
I could see having the remote start to start your truck in the winter if it's parked in front of your house and you just want the truck to warm up some. But the disappointing range and the fact that the truck will turn off when I open the door is enough of a downer to make me never use the remote start feature.
Just my experience and my opinion.
