Removing "Double Decker" cargo shelf

I might argue the 3rd row seating option was equally as head scratching as the DD cargo system.

In theory the DD cargo system makes sense but it practice its more of a pain in the ass then it's worth. There isn't enough clearance underneath for anything larger than a small bag, and putting large luggage on top prevents the cargo cover from being used.

Mines been permanently folded down since the first road trip I took with it and discovered how worthless it really is.

I found a use for it finally today. Since mine is always folded down anyway.

I removed mine and I’ve actually been thinking about reinstalling it. No particular reason why, just kind of nostalgic I think.

I bought the trim piece and a non DD carpet from a wrecked 4Runner, but the carped didn’t quite fit right. I also had to cut out some of the padding because of the brackets for the DD, so its definitely not universal. I ended up putting the old carpet back as it looks better I think. And I like the plastic trays on each end.

The trim piece does work and I just bought some grey carpet felt and cut a narrow strip to cover the gap between the trim piece and the carpet. Looks totally normal. But I have a weathertech liner, so doesn’t really matter.

Does anyone have any experience removing the cargo shelf? Seemed like a good idea when I bought my 06, but at this point I never use it ... seems that nothing I carry is ever a good fit. So I'm thinking about removing it and am looking for pointers ...

It took me about 15 mins with a couple of sockets about a month ago. Be aware that it will leave about a 3" strip w/o carpet near the back of the 2nd row seat, if you don't put back the block it connects to. That did not bug me since I'm planning to install a drawer system back there using the bolt holes.

Same here. Seemed to make sense, it came with the Runner we picked but it was not a deciding factor. Turned out to be useless. Investigating removing it and possibly making a box in the back for my own 'shelf' and useful drawers.

I removed mine after years of hating the storage/ crap always falling off and not being able to fully use that space! I built this 2 story shelf out of 3/4 plywood and installed it using the bolt holes in the floor the SD shelf was in!




I put my tool kit, air compressor, survival essentials and other things down below that are not used everyday. The bins in the top can be used for groceries , car parts or can be removed if you wanted to put something larger back there like suit cases or other things
