removing the radio bezel

been searching and no pics trying to install my radio and can't find any pics here or on yota tech, i want to try and do it with out removing the shifter plastic

I don't believe it's possible without removing the shifter plastic. It really isn't that hard to unbolt it. There are 2 bolts (left and right) holding the shifter plastic on. All you've got to do it remove the shifter knobs and unbolt the plastic. Really simple! Trust me, do it right the first time and you won't have to worry about it ever again.

Here is a great writeup....although it is for 96-97 but the info is similar to that of other 3rd Gens....helped me out on my 01.

mines a '99 with the push button 4wd on the shifter there and makes that bit more difficult i don't want even mess with those wires at all , i saw that write up but still was hoping that someone found a way of doing it or what was involved if i had to remove that, grrrrr i'm trying to do the by-pass on my hu so my passenger can watch movies, which i dont get why i have to do that in teh first place how is looking at that screen for a dvd any worse then looking at the very same screen for navigation? pos laws

mines a 5spd all i have to do is pull it up and move it to the side

It is very simple. Pull the cupholder trim up slightly, then pull the shifter trim up. There is 1 screw below the 4wd button you must remove. There will be 1 wire connector attached to the switch you dont have to unclip the connector but I would. You will see why you have to remove the shifter trim when you see the bottom of the radio bezel.

I have an AT and i do the same, I also have a screen so I'm not really seeing what is so complicated here. Are you installing a relay bypass or switch bypass? I use a switch bypass so all I had to do was hook the pbrake wire to a switch and then ground the other side. I flip the switch up then down and my gf can watch dvd's while I drive, flip the switch once if I get pulled over and the warning screen pops on.

lol yeah i was going for this but just hooked it to the lock in the glove box so now i just open then close the glove box to get the dvd function to work while driving, lol, i may go for a switch just to make it cleaner. thanks for the help guys!

No need to remove the shift knobs or any of that! The boot around the 4x4 stick easily unclips from the plastic surrounding both shifters. It has a wire ring at the base, which you can squeeze gently (it will bounce back) to unhook it from the underside of the plastic trim. Trust me, I've done this 100 times. There is no need to remove the 4x4 shift knob.
