Repair or Replace Tranny

Hi all...posted here a while ago regarding a tranny problem where the trans would not downshift into 1st gear occasionally when doing "stop and go" driving.
It's a '97 Limited with 185k kms on it. The tranny had been abused by previous owner I suspect from towing with O/D engaged. Fluid was burnt.

Anyhow, problem is getting worse and my question is this.

Should I get the tranny repaired or swap in another tranny from my spare "parts" truck that has 420k kms on it.

Anyone have any links to how to go about swapping out the tranny?

There is a guy who lives not too far from home who is supposed to be a transmission "hotshot" and thought I'd drop in to get his opinion but wanted to draw on the collective knowledge of the good folks here first.

Thanks for your input.

Sounds like you've got solenoids sticking. You could try replacing them first. If it doesn't help, swap the trans.

If the price is right (cheap), I'd go with the used one.

There have been posts of folks removing the tranny, but never a full DIY for removal and replacement.

Well I dropped into the transmission guy's place today and no one home so I'll go back. If he's saying I should have complete rebuild, well I'm going to pull the tranny out of a spare 98 ltd I own.

It's a bit of a job however due to where it's parked (out in a field). I don't have a trans jack and essentially it will be a pain in posterior to do it.

With that said, easier to do it now than when there is 2 feet of snow blowing around.

I have a few days yet to decide on a course of action but I'm babying the truck pretty good atm.
I'll let you guys know what the pro says and then decide what to do.
