Replace entire Brake system with Tundra's?

Because of age and oversize tires I am beginning to consider rebuilding the brakes on my 4Runner. Since it is looking like replacing brake lines would be a good idea when I do this, I was considering replacing the entire system.

My question is, other than cost, is there any reason why I couldn't take the brake system out of a Tundra and put it in my 4Runner. I'm talking everything, master cylinder, calipers, lines, power assists, complete hardware replacement.

I know it's expensive to replace everything, but is there any technical reason it won't work?

In all seriousness i think you could make this work, and if you do I'll be following behind!

Where you may hit a snag is when it comes to ABS, driver aids always throw a wrench into plans like that so I would consider that possibility carefully. Also I don't know how you would put on tundra rear drums, or if that would really be worth it.

Any how, good luck! You can call it the TTBBU (total tundra big brake upgrade)
 
Would be interesting for sure. However doing so would be costly even if you got most items at a wrecking yard. Even so it can be done im sure. If the bolt pattern is the same in the tundra as the 4runner on the rear hub it should be almost a bolt on swap for the rear drums, axle size not sure about. I have done plenty of work on 4runner, tundra and tacoma rear brakes and axles and they are pretty much the same.
Rear brakes really are not the weak point on the 4runner its the under sized front brakes, everything about them is too small. Why fix was it not broken.
 
It's not broken yet. I was mainly asking in preparation of the replacement. I am definitely upgrading the the fronts. I had just read some stories that said the stock hydraulics were a little small to run the Tundra calipers well, and since I was thinking about doing brake lines at the same time I figured I'd ask about replacing the entire hydraulic system.

Honestly, I was barely considering swapping the drums, my only concern with the drums is that currently mine are self lubricating. Apparently when the shop replaced my axle seals they did not replace the shoes, just cleaned them.

I might go ahead with this, after I get finish my degree in May (assuming I can find a job).
 
The calipers should be enough to do the trick, I remember looking at Tundra brake master cylinders and they were only 13/16" rather than 1" in the 3rd gen.

You can swap a brake booster from a T100 pickup and use that to run a larger master cylinder. The 4 bolt master cylinders have a 1 1/16" option from the late 2nd gen V6 w/ ABS. 3rd gen's 2 bolt master has a max size of 1" from what I've seen.

I agree with the rear disc conversion. But at the moment that's a little out of my considered price range
 
There's alot of guys who have done this. I'm not sure what forum it was, but you can google it. I think you have to grind the edges of the tundra caliper to make it fit though.
 
I've read several tundra brake swaps. But all that I had read only swapped the calipers. Since I am considering replacing the rest of the system I figured I'd ask the question.

Yea he is talking about doing a brake booster and master cylinder swap. Im sure its possible, just cost would be pretty high and I would not want to use non oem parts.

An estimate using Advanced Auto Parts was in excess of $1000 for all of the hardware. I would use OEM parts so I would expect at least $1500 for parts.

But I have never been one to skimp on costs for "safety" equipment (the ability to stop, steer, maintain traction). I also have a strong preference for preventative maintenance on those parts.

Better safe than upside down in a ditch.

Yes I agree. Only way cost effective would be to get used iem parts.
