Replaced Dash Cluster now a problem

So, I replaced part of my dash cluster because the trip meter stopped working. Now he speedometer isn't working. It has to be something simple, because both speedometers worked prior to taking them apart.

Any thoughts??

Grey w/blue stripe wire (2nd pin) is the speed signal, Black w/yellow stripe 12v switched wire (7th pin) in the brown connector
at least, in the 96...
Is it only the speedometer? Is everything else working fine?

Trip stoped working and I wanted to get my replacement to match the current mileage. Took apart using your directions and adjusted tie odometer to the current and correct mileage. Put back together and everything works except the speedometer. I tried both clusters and and everything works except the speedometer.. who knows what I screwed up.

Did you only pull one apart yet now neither speedo works when plugged in? Or are you swapping the speedos in one cluster? Is the tiny wire I mentioned intact? We talked about leaving the odometer alone and swapping in the good trip odometer to your old cluster, right?

Sorry so many questions, just want to understand correctly, want to help.
 
I pulled both apart to swap odometer and trip to make one good one.

This is the one I took apart almost 30,000 miles ago. The arrows are pointing to 3 of the 4 copper wires from the windings attached to posts. I can't even see the last one, but it's there.

I actually took the spare one I had apart to get a better understanding. It's not easy to do (not recommended) because of the location of one of the latches but if you need pics I can probably provide.

Thing is, I don't know if the odo will work if the speedo isn't but yours is working. I know both speedo and odo in mine was not when I disabled the abs (where the signal comes from). Can you move the needle by hand? it's not at all stuck- or so free the shaft moves but the needle doesn't?
I've been doing some research and have also seen a few posts where the shaft was broken...

This is great. At least 2 of the 3 are not connected and just hanging out there. I just thought that they were the end wires of he coooer wrap. The dash will come apart again tonight. I will post after I get the wires hooked up and make sure that it works again.

Be aware I am not 100% on this though I can see solder on the ends of each of the loose wires (3 on the spare speedo that I've never tested because I just wanted the trip odo off it) and can also see the remainder of the wire wrapped around the posts under the solder on them.
Curious how you'll get those teensy broken wires back together without overdoing the heat. Crossing my fat clumsy fingers all goes well for you!
 
Also- just changed my write-up so that the first thing you see after 'fixed my trip odo' is a warning about those wires so thanks for making me aware and alter the post to better alert others. Gently removing the trip odo doesn't have anything to do with the wires if you're watching what you're holding, but they could theoretically break just from handling the part as old and small as they are.

Please update either way, either here or via pm. All fingers are crossed, and toes, too!

Well I had 3 of the 4 copper wires were not connected to the posts. 2 of the 3 I connected with no problems. The 3rd wire broke and I was unable to connect it. So, I've ordered my thirds cluster and hopefully it will be an easy fix this time. On a side note, I'm now a pro at disassembling the dash.

Also. Now the 4x4 light doesn't work but the 4x4 does work. Not sure what hat could be because it worked before. The bulb is good and I even swapped with another one and still no go.

Thought about you when I saw an actual intact cluster in the junkyard this past weekend. Upickapart on the IL side of the river. Wondered how things worked out. I'm impressed you were able to get the ones connected that you did! Best of luck with your replacement and thanks so much for the update.


As for the 4x light, bump!
 
Well I'm tired of screwing with this pos, if I were to call camelbacka about a new speedometer, who should I ask for when I call??
