You have to break the plastic grids off on the inside of the box. I had to do the same thing when I replaced.

Need help... I'm confused.
All I want to do is change out the subwoofer in my 2006 Sport JBL 4Runner. Spoke to Crutchfield for the easiest solution and I ordered the Rockford Fosgate and was told it would be a simple "plug & play" no amp replaced & with the greatest potential difficulty drilling 4 new holes if the holes did not line up... with that said I thought all I would have to do is remove this panel and not have to pullout the rear corner interior... am I wrong? How do I remove just this one panel without having to pull apart the interior corner.... Thanks!

I do not think that panel is removeable on a JBL equipped 4runner. It looks to me like that is a non-JBL 4runner with the sub swap. Here's info on accessing the sub for a 4runner with JBL.

Update on my end
I went with the Rockville Shallow Mount 8" and picked up a Boss R1100M amp to push it. Had every intention of doing the install myself, but between my work schedule and some pretty stacked up weekends including an upcoming road trip, I pulled the trigger and had Best Buy install it.
Install was approximately $105 with tax and wasn't charged for the sub swap, just the amp install. Far less expensive than the local high end car/home audio shop at $270. Took about 2.5 hours from drop off to pick up. We'll call that the "good" part.
The bad, the Geek Squad installer in the bay was a total d!ck. Came off extremely condescending and immediately jumped onto the offensive side trying to tell me that the subwoofer wasn't going to work in the stock JBL enclosure, that it would sound no better than a sub not in any kind of box, told me it would blow. The guy told me that my best bet was to return the sub I bought and buy a OEM JBL replacement from eBay because it wasn't going to get any better than that. Really debated just picking up my boxes and walking out, but I just couldn't bear to listen to the busted factor sub in the back of my T4R. This guy went as far as telling me that he'd never had 1 satisfied customer with this kind of set up and hand wrote into the work order and made me sign off that I was "aware" that it would not sound right and I assumed all responsibility.
Picked up the ride, got in, sounded okay, not great and I left just because I didn't feel like dealing with the guy's attitude anymore. Got home and started adjusting the settings on the amp and the crossover on my head unit and while I haven't got it just right yet, there is PLENTY of hard bass that he basically told me was impossible and I wasn't going to get. Also, for what its worth, the guy had left everything turned down and bass boost switch turned off when I picked it up, my guess is so that I would think to believe that he was correct. So far, he couldn't have been more wrong.

You can't remove that panel by itself without breaking it, the tabs are glued at the top. You have to take off the whole trim piece

It sure would have made life easier if that panel did come out independently though.
Yea...bass is all relative, I like the factory system...its nice and well balanced, However I am a couple decades away from my teen years when everyone was building boxes for everything and then building them bigger and badder...the problem was the second you got into another guys car, yours sounded like shit!

I ended up going with an 8" Rockford Fosgate sub (same as nicheel8 did). I ordered off Amazon, and ended up going with a used one from Amazon warehouse as I had a coupon.
Got the sub wired and ready to put in and noticed it was a 4 ohm version. The box and what I ordered was the 2 ohm one. Amazon must have put it in the wrong box. I wired it according to the instructions for 2 ohm. Is this OK? I plan to add another amp soon. It sounds good, slightly more noticeable than the factory sub running on the jbl amp.

Did you have to drill new holes to install the sub? Debating if I should go with the Rockford Fosgate for $100 or just get a factory replacement from Toyota for $200.

I am currently running a kenwood ddx372bt head unit with JBL GT7-6c in the front doors, planning to put something similar in the back doors. Just looking for some added base not something that will rattle the fillings out of mouth.

Ever since the Best Buy Geek Squad install I've had these minor problems here and there, like sound stuck in front and no sound in the rear. Usually was fixed by cutting off the head unit (Kenwood DDX-371) and turning it back on. That was until about an hour ago when I cranked up to head back to the office from lunch and had ZERO sound from all 9 speakers and only a faint rumble from the newly installed sub. Tried the power off/on cycle for the head unit a few times. Nothing!
The install is covered under a warranty and I went ahead and made an appointment tomorrow to have it looked. No time to tinker during the next two weekends.
Have any of y'all had any kind of similar issues? Any ideas what may be behind the problem?

I had to drill some new holes in the sub box. The Fosgate comes with self-tapping screws but I still used a small drill bit for a pilot hole.
I have the 4 ohm sub. Just wire it using the following diagrams.

So I ended up adding an amp to my setup. I went with the Rockford Fosgate R250x1 amp. I wired it 2 Ohm to my sub, and man does it sound great! Low bass notes really stand out. For a totally concealed system, I am very happy with the results. I think I spent $220 total for everything (amp, sub, and wire kit off of Amazon).
I placed the amp underneath the passenger seat. It was the perfect size to fit just above the heater vents. It sits between there and the hump towards the front of the seat perfectly. The benefit of this location is it keeps it away from blocking the vents, and people in the back can't really kick it. Down side is the seat needs to be removed to adjust the amp settings. All wires were pretty self explanatory. I ran the power from the battery, to the passenger side (there is a grommet), then down the door sill and under the carpet. RCAs and remote wire came down the center console area.
A few tips; I stuffed the factory sub enclosure with polyfill as several here have recommended. For the 8" Rockford sub I used, it prefers a small enclosure. By adding the polyfill, you reduce the volume.
Also, go around to each bolt around the sub enclosure and make sure everything is tight (you don't want any rattles). I tightened the sub box bolts, factory amp bolts and there were a few others. If you tap on the sub box (while empty) you can listen for any rattles or vibrations. There is a small plastic tab at the bottom of the box. It hooks over the 4runner body. I noticed this plastic tab was rattling slightly against the body. I used a piece of foam and put it between the tab and the sheet metal.
