Replaced the muffler

I recently added the Johnson Rod to my truck. It made a sizable difference. But as the website suggests, it's most noticeable on warmer days.

I have a 2000, but I believe that just means I'll have to shorten the long front end of the pipe...correct?

Yup, their holiday deals may make it a little cheaper. I think you need to wait a few weeks until you can actually use the coupon. I went with Amazon because I already had a $200 gift card. A member on here reviewed this system. I believe it was Dirtbike250x.

Not to derail this fabulous thread (ha!) but I would also like to hear from those with a JBA system in terms of fit, finish and sound.

Will do. The exhaust should come tomorrow via the brown truck. I'll try to get it installed this saturday or the next depending on work. BTW, since you are in Ohio, I recommend you take a look at your post-catalytic converter exhaust hanger. Mine is rusted beyond reuse which is odd considering I have no other rust. It seems that Toyota left these uncoated. The new part(OEM only) is about $34 on ebay and will make installation a ton easier.

Thanks for the heads up on the hanger! I'll crawl up under the old girl tomorrow and see what that hanger looks like..(unlike y'all we got no snow and its suppose to be 45*-50* this weekend!!). I'm like you...I have pretty close to zero rust. Lots of preventive maintenance and cleaning...but it's paid off over the years!

Thanks a lot for agreeing to giving us feedback on this exhaust system. I'm sure it's a quality system. It's just nice to hear it from someone...instead of just reading it in an ad..lol!! Are you going to coat your piping (inside and out) and the outside of the muffler...with a product like Jet Hot coating? I'm going to...not worried about the heat retaining aspect, but I'm looking for the protection it provides for the metal. Yeah, I know it's S/S...but even S/S ends up rusting sooner or later. Like I said...I'm a big preventive maintenance nut! It also helps my buddy has a shop that does this...so, I'll do the work and just have to pay for material.

When do you think I'll be able to use the coupon code for the discount...you said a "couple of weeks"??

I don't plan on coating it. Not sure how much the coating would cost me. I would imagine that I would have to send it to them making it cost more than the actual exhaust system. At that point I would just order a Borla or TRD system. But since you can do it that cheap, then by all means go for it. I'm usually very picky in the winter to begin with. I avoid taking it out when I know there is salt on the roads and if I have to, then I wash the hell out of it after. If it does start rusting then I will contact JBA. If it is out of the warranty period but repairable then I will remove any surface rust there is and then paint it with high heat paint.

Regarding the coupon code I have no idea. Advance should have it in some fine print on the advertisement. That's where I remember seeing it a few weeks back.
 
Aap shows that the exhaust only fits 96-98 4runners. Were there any differences on the newer ones that would make this not work? I know the catalytic converters are different but what about the rest of it?

I have a 2000, and I think I'm going to pick one of these up. From what I understand...from the muffler back is exactly the same. The only difference is the cat end, which is due to older models have one cat and the newer 4R have two. At least I hope...lol!!

If anyone knows something different please chime in...

This is correct, although '99 and 2000 can be one-cat Federal OR Cali. type two-cat and two cat Cali's were sold all over the country in those years as many states adopted the Cali spec as standard. It's not strictly new and old in those two years. So on your 2000, be sure of which you have before you order, don't just rely on the state you think the truck is from.

It looks like you could fit the linked muffler on a Cali just by cutting down the inlet pipe. I can't guarantee it bolts up to a Cali rear cat but they use the same gasket so one hopes it would. The tailpipe on a Cali and a 49-state are the same Toyota p/n so the issue is only in the front.

If it won't bolt up, I would think any muffler shop could deal with it relatively cheaply with generic parts to gin up an inlet pipe..

Thank you kindly Durk!! This gives me a warm fuzzy feeling about moving forward. Like you said...worst case I can hit the local muffler shop if I need help getting the front ends to match up !!

This is something I can't do myself, spin surgery in july and rehabbing now. Sounds like lot of you got ripped off at BIRTH! :whip: :rockthrow:
