Replacing stock O2 with wideband?

I'm looking to put a wideband on my 99' 4Runner Limited (5vz-fe) since I think my front O2 sensor has gone bad (Code P1135 & P1133). I'm planning to go boosted in the near future, so I'll need a wideband anywys.

Can I replace my stock O2 sensor with an aftermarket wideband? Will the computer read it ok? If so, which one should I go with? I don't mind if I need to cut the connector off the old (stock) O2 and solder it onto the wideband.

You can't just swap sensors without swapping the stock ECU. The widebands use a totally different technology and the signal is completely different. There may be a way to do it--that's beyond my pay grade--but it is way beyond just swapping sensors.

Well, I'm certainly not swapping ECUs.

Didn't the later model 3rd gens come with A/F ratio sensors (i.e. widebands) while the older ones came with narrowbands? Am I wrong on that?

By the way, I think I have the California emissions on mine; it has two cat converters on it.

Good news!! Then you already have a wideband sensor.

Wideband air/fuel sensors were used on the '99 and '00 Cali. emissions and all '01 and '02 4Runners. These were also the models with two cats.

So can we wire in a wideband gauge in the stock afr sensor without drilling and welding a new bung?

Most people weld a bung for the wbo2. If you want an aftermarket wbo2 for monitoring actual AFR than yes you want it in a seperate bung and allow the stock one to report to the ECU.

Is there a way to display the stock WBO2 that the computer sees? Or do I have to install an aftermarket into the new bung to display it?
