Reseting Check engine light

Does disconnecting the battery clear the error codes and reset the Check engine light on a 2003 4runner? The guy at Autozone is telling me it does and the guy at Advance auto is telling me it does not.

Why not just try it, it only takes a minute to unhook the battery.

Yup, that has worked on all the cars I've ever owned. Be aware that if the problem that is causing the CEL persists, then it will throw the CEL again.

Also be aware that this method will also create other issues - such as making the rear window not work until you reset it.

It will turn the CEL light off but the code is stored in the ECU maybe that is what the Advance auto guy meant.

Also if you still have the CEL issue it will come back on in time.

At this point I've tried unhooking the battery and having the codes cleared at Autozone, and in both cases the CEL light goes off briefly but comes back on within a minute or two with the same error codes. It's giving me P2238 and P2241 which are both front oxygen sensors. I've replaced both and I'm wondering if there is some other method for clearing the codes that I'm not aware of.

Also, I noticed the rear window not working. How do I reset that?

I believe you just need to use the switch inside the vehicle to roll the window down and back up 2-3 times (auto function won't work). This should reset it.

The ECU will take a few drive cycles to determine if the error has been cleared it does not just reset.

I recently bought this scanner to help me make sure I had fixed an issue since I kept getting random information from my Autozone, problem seemed to vary by who had the scanner in his hand....... :bash:
