rims and exhaust question

Hello all... got an '05 4runner and looking to get some new shoes for the ride. i'm thinking about getting some 20's and installing a flowmaster exhaust while i'm at it. i've heard that if i got to 22's, then i would need to change my brake system to handle the bigger wheels. i'm going to have 2 sets of rims, one for the winter and the other for the summer. now some of you are wondering, wait your in hawaii, well i'm using my friends login, i'm living in oregon. so here are the questions:

1) if i stick w/ the 20's, would it be best to change the brake system or stick w/ the originals?

2) any high performance brake mfg's to recommend i should look at?

3) should i look at another exhaust brand besides flowmaster or just stick w/ the orginal plan?

i think you should be ok if you have 20's to keep the stock rotor size and pads....but should replace em while you got the wheels off. (of course if you havent already) as far as the flowmaster i bought one recently for a '98 T4R and i love it

I'd just stick with the 20s since you have to remember the bigger you go above stock just hampers handling,acceleration and most importantly braking (so bigger brakes would be a safety upgrade) and as most mechanics are starting to see with the oversize wheel craze is premature wear and tear of wheel hubs and CV axles and other associated parts but people seem to not care about that as much as looks.

I have 20's currently on my 05 and there is not the slightest need to upgrade your brakes.

Not unless you want to blow 2k to 3k on something not needed.

Magnaflow seems to make a very nice looking and complete cat-back system for our trucks. I have a Magnaflow setup on my Saleen and love it. This is on my list of upgrades for the 4Runner as well.

I'm in the process of upgrading my 05 to a set of 22's to fill out my wheelwell more. The 20's look good, I just feel the need for a bit more rim though. I'll let you know if I think a brake upgrade is needed after testing it out. I'm 99.9% sure it won't be needed. As for bigger wheels causing pre-mature wear on parts, ya I can see that happening. Jacked up trucks with big wheels and tires have the same issues. It's all part of the game. If you want to be the man, you gotta pay the price.

hey guys... thanks again for all of your input on my situation. guess i'll go w/ 20's and try not to brake too hard and wear them out quickly. is it true that if i go w/ a bigger brake system, i probably won't be able to put my stock rims back on b/c of the size and all? i think i'll stick w/ the flowmaster option. when i get everything done, i'll post some pics on this thread to give ya some updates.

i appreciate all of the info and if something else comes up that you think i might want to look at, i'd really welcome all the info i can get.

If you go with upgraded brakes it's very doubtful you'll be able to put the stock wheels back on. There's not much extra room between the calipers and wheel on a stock setup.

The reason upgraded systems stop better is because the disks and calipers are bigger, so there's probably no way to get the stockers back on after you upgrade.

thanks for the info, never thought about it that way. what about this, say i change the brake system to more high performance/better quality but get ones that are the same size. reason is b/c i'm assuming that the stock parts may not be as good as aftermarket brakes. good idea and do they even make them? keep'um coming

Little will be regained in braking performance by swapping to a larger rotor/caliper combo as braking effectivness is really more of a factor of tire contact patch.

Sure if you went from a 10" solid rotor/2piston to a 14" vented/6 piston you might loose some distance but you might be keeping the same unsprung weight. Yet toyota alredy uses vented rotors (not sure on the size) with 4 pistons...not half shabby.

The toyota brakes are fantastic...If anything I would swap out for a higher Cf pad set but by no means would I swap for a BBK as you are not going to surpass the abilities of the brake system just by adding larger rims and tires.

Sure your braking distance will increase a bit with larger rims/tires, rotational mass and unsprung weight are killers, but by adding more weight in the form of a BBK (unless you can get one lighter than the OEM setup) you are doing about zero benefit. The real benefit from a larger setup is more consistant brake performance. Distance reduction is only a by product in most cases.

I would say to check out Hawk or Axxis pads...you might find a pad that has a higher Coeff. of Friction (better stopping) with less dusting than the OEM pads.

This was my task for the day..to find a better set of pads than the OEM toyota ones.

my opinion

If you don't have the sport and you want to run 22's, upgrading your brakes to the sports model, they are a little bigger would be worth while but running 22's is not going to effect your brakes that much. Your wheel bearings will go out in about 15-20000 miles just due to the added stress from the bigger tires.

Your brakes will be fine, they just might need a little more drivers input once you first change rims, and you might have to more liberaly apply the force to the pedal, but thats about it. It will shorten the life of the pads and rotors, but unless your autocrossing the Runner, I don't see a need for Hawk, or Mean green pads. And if your that worried, next time they start going bad just upgrade then.

As for exhaust, I'm going with the magnaflow, I've had them in the past on my mustangs and love the quality and sound. Not to mention its about 200 bucks cheaper than the borla.
