Out of curiosity, how well does the multi-mode AWD work offroad? I'm looking at 2001 and 2002 4Rs simply because they are the newest 3rd gen you can buy. If I do any serious offroading in the future I could always add lockers like you are planning on doing, but I'm curious how well it works in factory trim.

Well as I said in the buyer's guide, multi mode doesn't do a damn thing off road. AWD gives you the ability to have power going to all four wheels and still be used on pavement. Normal 4wd would bind up because it does not allow differential action between the front and rear axles.

I got the first 02 because I liked the color and wanted the multi-mode awd option.

I got the second one because of the same reasons. For the record, I plan to go with ARB lockers in the near future which are far stronger than the toyota e-locker anyway.

Jonathan ward of icon swears by the OEM Toyota rear differential lock and says ARB rear locker isn't as good. For me it's just the extra cost really. I'm not a mechanic guy like you guys, I have to pay for everything

The 4wd system on the '01 & '02 works great for offroading. When you lock the center differential, the truck has the same 4 wheel drive as the earlier year trucks.

The advantage is that you can unlock the center diff, and have AWD too. This works great on snowy & icy roads.

I love my '02 for those wintery Michigan roads! (I-94, neighbor)

I finally got one of those fancy tablets.. and mounted it in the truck!

What/Why:
The reason I wanted a tablet mounted was so that I could use various maps while on trips and have them accessible.. all while not using my phone and its battery/Data.

I went with the Galaxy tablet because it has a Micro SD card slot and WiFi & GPS capability. Meaning I could download the map of the area I was going ahead of time and just use the GPS to navigate around.

Parts/Cost:
$80 (normally $120): Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" E Lite 8gb WiFi (HERE)
$30: Arkon Slim-Grip drill base mount (HERE)
$10: 32GB Micro SD Card (wow these have become inexpensive!)
$10: Backcountry Navigator Pro App [for Android]


Tools:
-Drill
-Short wood screws

Time:
10 mins..

Procedure:
Just find where you want to mount it, mark the locations for the screws, drill some pilot holes and mount it.

Regarding the APP. It is the only app I have paid for, ever. But it is completely worth it. It has maps of the country from tons of different sources: CalTopo, US Topo, OpenCycleMaps showing terrain worldwide, USGS, Canada Topo, Marine map, USGS Color Aerial photography, and Accuterra (for an extra cost). You can set waypoints and record tracks.

Those are just #74's already in a twist lock. The ones in my field monitor were all toast so I got new twists with the bulbs

Thanks man. I started the LED swap on the interior after work today. I really like how bright the cargo area is with the 3110 festoons, but I gotta say it looks a bit fluorescent bulb-ish inside with the cool white bulbs now. Maybe just takes a bit of getting used to.

Great builds by the way. Kudos for all the great write ups...they've been very helpful. I've been lurking here for awhile after ditching my 02 Tacoma and getting an 01 4R a couple years ago. Just started getting busy on the mods.
