Rockauto CV axle's? Opinions?

Interesting.... I might be fine with the cardones then since I am planning to lift my rig about 3 inches max... That said... How easy is it to reboot the OEM cv's? I've never done rebooting..

I don't mind the down time of rebooting actually. Just more so the thought, "Hey if I can buy a new product, might as well just swap it and be lazy" haha

I was of that same mentality, but now that I've been through it, I've got my own lessons and takeaways from it. You really can't beat the OEM axles.

As far as re-booting... It's not a hard job from what I've seen. I'd definitely give it a go when I need too. You'll do a lot of the "heavy lifting" in the swap out already. Rebuilding, is just a messy job, because you have to deal with all of that grease, but it's mainly undoing some C-clips, cleaning, re-assembly, packing with new grease, and re-clamping IIRC. If you search, you'll come across some re-build write-ups I'm certain. They always help to let you know what you're getting into and either inspire confidence or let you know that it's more than you can chew.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

I don't plan on bringing my truck to a shop. Going to do all the work myself so theres that.
Just some free advice for people to consider. I don't want others to get screwed over like me. I wish I had done it myself too, it doesn't look that hard. I think I'm going back to oem when these fail.

I have put in hundreds of aftermarket cv axles (cardone etc.) over the years on everything imaginable and usually have no problems for years, yes the oem are better however they are incredibly expensive and most of the oem ones are not the same quality that originally came with your vehicle. I am not going to tell you to do these yourself because I have no idea your skill level and there are many things you can do wrong. Having a overly lifted (or incorrectly lifted) vehicle with oem or aftermarket cv axles you will have problems anyways. I have seen oem axles fail just a quickly as reman's

The only CV axles I have ever NOT broken were factory Toyota units. I have busted 12 aftermarket front axles of every type imaginable on my old 87 4runner when wheeling and 2 on the 2005 V8. Now, I won't get anything other than a factory CV axle or carry a spare inside the truck (which I do now).

Thats crazy.. Guess i'll just be booting my factory ones then!

Yea, I'm convinced to boot the axle now. Doesn't seem that much of a pita though since I figured out I can remove the dog bone/outer CV from the inner CV cup with ease. haha

So i'm finally convinced to boot my OEM axles, but I'm wondering.. Which CV boot kit should I buy? Would the Beck and arnley boot be fine? Or should I spend the money for the OEM Boot?

I can get all 4 boots (2X inner, 2X outer) for the same price as 1 toyota OEM boot from rockauto...

I think you'd be good with the RA kits IMO. I know that Beck/Arnley actually produce parts for OEM's. Not sure about this particular part though. If you'd like a little added piece of mind, spend a little more and get the Moogs from RA.

Just a thought. You may want to consider doing the "boot slider mod" or something like that, since you're going through with the rebuild. If you can't find it here in a search, try Tacoma World, but it's basically where you leave the remnants of your old boot (the rubber and small clamp) in the grooves on the shaft and boot over them. This essentially creates a new hard stop while keeping the boot stretched out, keeping the fins from coming into contact with each other and destroying itself. Just food for thought, so check it out. I'll probably do it when/if I rebuild.

Which Moog boots are you talking about? They aren't listed. Only the beck/Arnley parts. :( https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog...4.0l+v6,1434454,drivetrain,cv+joint+boot,2284

That mod seems very interesting and very easy to do. I'll go ahead and do that! Thanks for the recommendation!

These.

Odd that it only shows up for 03-05 year models. Don't know if the V8 makes a difference either. I doubt theres a difference though.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you very much!
Seems like the Beck/arnley are the same P/N so I figure I won't have issues with the Moogs... Interesting though.. Hope it goes well.

Yeah you may even find that the Beck and Moog's are the exact same parts. As an experiment I ordered two different lower ball joints, a Moog and an AC Delco that were two different prices and when they came they were the exact same parts as I expected.

Did you ever order these rock auto boots? Did the inners fit well? Im putting together a order through them and need to reboot my cvs too.

I ordered both the Moog and Beck/Arnley boots and they came as a similar looking boot, so I ended up returning the moogs and kept the Beck/Arnley's. But YMMV.

That said, the inners and outers fit perfectly. (I figure since i'm already there, I'll just do both) I did the boot mod with them too, and had no issues.

My experience with aftermarket axles is that literally every single one of them are complete junk. Even the napa axles that supposedly are made by the same "OEM" manufacturer are also crap. I have those on my truck now, they are currently failing. I could see how rebuilding the factory axles would be fine, unless they are scored on the inside from getting sand in the bearings.

PS- There are no Toyota parts made in China, so its unlikely that any axle that costs under $500 is either made in Japan or worth putting on your truck. I have seen with my own eyes, a 4th gen v8 owner on the Rubicon simply put his truck into 1st gear on a rock in 4 low and break the aftermarket axle. Literally just by putting it into gear and starting to go up a rock the axle broke... I don't want that crap on my car, ever.
