I watched some youtube videos on painting cars and trucks with a roller for less than $100. most recommend rustolium, and it does well. I chose valspar because of the color options. Wife wanted TN orange. I bought 2 quarts of primer, and 2 gallons of paint. mixed the paint with mineral spirits 40/60 and used a 3 inch fine roller. I think i ended up with 7 coats, and only used 1 gallon. super thin coats, 6 hours between coats.

How much wet sanding did that take I hear it's a ungodly amount?

only sanded the body work and primer, the paint must be thin enough to not bubble or run. I could probably do 3 more coats right now to make it look better. On the roof i put it on thick and got heavy orange peal i just kept adding the coats and it smoothed out.

i ordered a fender without the hole..... i improvised, i didnt want to take it back off.

I don't see the need for a clear coat. I can wash it and add another coat maybe once a year and keep it bright and fresh. It's a $1000 4runner with a $100 paint job. And it makes my wife happy. My other first gen is rattle can black.

This would likely have negative results. Any sort of acrylic urethane automotive clear will probably cause issues with the curing of the Valspar paint he used, unless he allowed it to breath for quite a long time, and then cleared it.

I plan to do my 4runner in gloss white, and then the topper in flat white soon. No clear coats - and I hear white is the best color to go for with a backyard job as the eye doesnt catch inperfections as well. Dont plan on tackling any orange peel or anything at all after painting.

Probablly have sinilar results as yours - which looks more than adequate. Very cool.

Ya know, its only a day's worth of wetsanding and buffing to perfection, 2000 grit will make the 4r go from good to "whoa!" real quick.

Jus' sayin', if you spend all that time masking off and painting it to make the 4r look good, why not just do one extra day's worth and make it look fantastic?
