Roof rack was trashed in a car wash....

Anybody know how much the roof rack on a 2011 4Runner Trail Edition is? Took our new 4Runner through the car wash and something caught on the back of my roof rack and ripped part of it off. I wasnt thrilled! The son of the owner of the car wash said it shouldn't have happened and that they would "help" me pay for it. I told them that they would pay for it and called USAA to help me with their insurance agent.

I'm curious how much it is because I damn sure like the Gobi racks and Gobi is just down the road from me. I would pay the difference but don't know how much the factory rack was to be able to figure the differential.

A dealership can tell you. You definitely have to get photos and possibly have some kind of a damage report made out. Check everything well to make sure nothing else is damaged and could leak. Post a pic. I need to learn how.

With OEM parts they will need to do more than "help" pay for it.

I had an issue with a car wash before....you have to notify them BEFORE you leave (just like with a valet). The place was very nice, said I could have a local place try do 'fix' the problem or their insurance would cover the replacement. Everything went smoothly. They should 100% cover any damage to your vehicle.

that can't be right. it sounds like the "optional roof rack crossbars" on an SR5.

OP: Toyota's price to replace will be staggering... see here. i don't know that that's the correct figure, but if you do a search i recall this being discussed many times before. that's why there seems to be a solid market for TE rack takeoffs.

if you get them to give you a check for the OEM cost, you will probably be well in the ballpark for a Baja or Gobi, which would be a better way to spend your $, imho.

Either way, you are not going to get GOBI money out of them, maybe $200 at max if it trashed the crossbars. The rack is bolted in with some huge bolts, and made to handle around 300#. If a car wash ripped one of them off, it would have taken large pieces of the truck with it, as well as denting the hell out of everything around it.

Well, I don't know what to tell you other than I'm not making it up. Furthermore, if you will go back and read my original post you'll find that I'm not trying to get "Gobi money" out of them, I am wanting to take whatever I get to replace my rack to put towards a Gobi. I clearly stated that I knew I would have to come out of pocket for the difference.

The rear crossbar is what was ripped off, it broke the plastic but it was weird, I was in the car when it happened and the car moved, then when it broke it made a loud noise when the broken piece hit the 4runner and my 4runner moved back to the normal position. It was almost like somebody slowly stepped on my rear bumper them jumped off.

Anyway, the caps that go on the rear of the roof racks won't line back up and pop onto the rack, the passenger side rail that runs the length of the roof is really loose, the rear crossmember broke off and there are two substantial scratches on my roof that the crossmember made when it was tore off. When I say substantial what I mean is they wont buff out. We bought this 2011 this past week and it was garage kept and didn't have a scratch on it

FYI: the TE doesn't have covers over the bolts like your SR5 does; different design. i was taking the OP at face value re: "roof rack was trashed"... how do you know what was "trashed" or what he will get "out of them"?

well, in turn, i was just being "voice of reason" to the previous post by clarifying that the roof rack is not in fact a $189 factory option.

The thing that concerns me the most is how loose it is now. I am praying that it didnt strip any screws.

What really pissed me off was when these 2 kids(20 yrs old or so) came around and handed me the crossmember. They admitted that the car wash shouldnt have ripped it off and that they would "help" me pay for it. I told them that they would replace whatever needed replacing and I didnt feel obligated to pay for a penny of the replacement cost. One of the kids was the owners son and he said "we have a warning sign against having ski racks on top of your car". That pissed me off and I explained to him that what I have is an OEM rack and there is no ski rack on top of my 4Runner. I explained to him that ski racks are after market. I told them that it was my wifes SUV and that we just bought it this weekend. The other kid said "maybe it was rotted out" and I explained to him that it was a new car. His response was "New or just new to you". Thats when I about lost it. I told him new to us but the original owner drove it off the lot brand new less than a year ago and it had been garage kept

Long story short, these kids were less than accomodating and I didnt have a good feeling that they would do the right thing. Thats why I called USAA and put them on it right away.

The reason I started this thread was to obtain as much information as possible about roof rack replacement for the Trail Edition because of my interest in Gobi racks. I am not trying to screw anybody but dont want to take insurance money to put towards a factory rack if I go Gobi anyway. I didnt know that there were 4 seperate pieces to the roof rack. It might be smarter to get new pieces for the OM rack, take it off and sell it and then buy the Gobi rack

None of us thinks that you are lying. Pictures just help to visualize what other parts might be damaged in addition to a crossmember.

I would get a quote for a roof rack repair from your local Toyota dealership. At least they will check if something else is damaged and needs to be repaired.
