Here's my Howling Moon 1.4 RTT. I have it mounted to a home brew roof rack.

I mount our RTT directly to the stock rails on my 4th gen (with stock crossbars removed). To have the tent open to the side, you need to rotate the tent rails 90-degrees and shorten them a few inches before bolting them to the tent base so that they essentially become your crossbars (very easy to do). It is about the lowest you can mount a RTT, and saves a ton of $$$ on an aftermarket rack.

FWIW, the Smittybuilt RTT looks pretty nice for the money. From the pictures, it looks amazingly similar to all of the other RTTs that are sourced from China (CVT, Tepui, etc.), and probably even comes out of the same factory.

Thanks for the input. I thought that the smittybilt would be ok, it looks like its a pretty stout set up for the money!

The CVT tents are IMO better quality than the ARB. I have seen both in person and CVT is constantly updating and improving where ARB is just holding status quo. Not to mention that CVT has like 10 different tents to chose from and then s couple options in each after that... ARB has the Simpson tent that has been updated only twice... I'd take a tepui or CVT over a ARB any day. I am going with a CVT for a couple reasons, on is they are about 2hrs away from me so it's a relatively local company/business and if I ever do have an issue I don't have to ship the tent I can just drive to them. Also yes their huge sale in April. While no they do not practically give them away, but they are 20%off and that with no shipping costs is huge.

for the 5th gens, anyone running full armor with RTT? my 5th get is in the shop getting bumpers put on, soon as that is done ill be heading to santa cruz for a tepui kukenam. I would like to know what springs I should run, I currently have radflos with 600# rate i believe.

I install mine before every trip and take it off when I get back. Unfortunately I can't fit in my garage with the tent on so it has to come off between trips. I'm happy with my Howling Moon.

I chose the Mt rainier. After installing it, I've decided to never remove it again. My wife is 120 lbs and us getting it onto the roof nearly killed me. I'll have to design some type of pulley system before I take it off again.

So I remember last year at the Snoverland Expo talking with Sierra Expeditions about Howling Moon RTTs and how they ran them without the rainfly because they were so weatherproof. Last trip I decided to take mine off to make setup and teardown easier and to be able to actually use the stargazer feature now that the weather was starting to warm up. Well, last weekend was the test because there was a chance of rain. I figured it probably wouldn't rain because it's Vegas, and even if it did it wouldn't be too bad.

Well sure enough it rained pretty steady for several hours, but thankfully no crazy pounding rain. I did have to zip the canvas closed on the roof and windows as the rain hitting the mesh would splatter through. I ended up leaving the tops of the side windows open along with the front and rear door. There was a small wet spot on my pillow that I'm pretty sure wasn't drool but was from a small drip off one of the tie backs for the stargazer canvas cover. The tie back material is PVC like the cover, which means that material won't swell and seal shut when wet like the canvas material on the rest of the tent.



Water did end up pooling on the overhang, which it has before with the fly on. In all fairness I did not stake the front lines out which would hold the overhang a little more taut, but there still would have been some water pooling. My only concern is a snow trip and having a heavy snow load there. Since it doesn't really snow that often in South Africa I'm guessing they've never thought about a snow load support bar before so I guess we'll see what happens the next time I go when it snows.

Howdy! A pulley system on the roof of your garage is always a great solution, but if you happen to have an extendable ladder with the articulating rubber grip feet, you can use that to slide the tent on to and off of the roofrack. Just wrap the legs on the other end with a microfiber towel to prevent scratching and denting and lean it up against the side of the roofrack (40'ish degree angle with a 15ft ladder) and it's really easy.
I built a dolly out of a 2x10 and some rubber casters and I just roll it up and tilt the tent over until the rails on the tent are resting on the rails of the ladder and it's really easy to slide up with one person on each side. Ditto for taking it off.
