I've been debating on getting one for the truck but I'm hesitant if it will be useful for me. I currently have a REI Kingdom 6 for my family (me, wife and 2 year old). I mainly do regular pull in campsites. My wife isn't the most outdoorsy person so she'll need a shower and bathroom.
Question for all RTT owners: What was the major factors that convince you to purchase a RTT?

1) not having to find the traditional spot to setup a ground tent
2) not having to setup a ground tent
3) can pull over after long day on the road and flip it open and goto bed. No blowing up air matresses laying out blankets and pillows its all stored in the tent ready to go. And its all stored on the roof out of the way.

Hardshells setup faster and are more aerodynamic and sometimes weigh less. But, are more expensive and often have less room both sleeping-wise and cargo space-wise on your rack for other items.

Always looking for more spots/reasons to get out and use my RTT.
Ill be campground camping in the Smokies here in a couple weeks.
I love the ease of the RTT when I go fly fishing. Its quick and easy, allowing me more time on the water. Having a foam mattress instead of a deflating/uncomfortable sleeping pad is also a big plus.
spent the weekend in the mtns and finally got to try out the full tent with annex. what a difference, it worked out so great.
I was able to leave the door open to the tent too so it felt really large inside. we had kids and dog sleeping in the annex part and stored food/used it for changing.
curious how most of you load your tents. I am restricted to a 7' garage entrance so I am not able to load it using a pulley system or leave it on. Here is a video (I don't know how to embed flickr videos sorry) I shot of me loading mine solo, not sure if there is a better way or not. this way works but unloading it is still tricky and has scratched my rack up pretty good.
I was strapped for room with 4 people and a dog so I ended up packing the annex on top of the tent under the cover along with a few other items. then strapped a couple of totes and chairs to the roof.
funny story about this trip. we went out near Rollinsville here in CO and winged it. we found a 4 wheel drive road and decided to take it and see where it landed us. on one of the turns there was a group of Nissan xterra's coming down with no room to pass so I had to back down the whole trail. these guys clearly dropped a lot of $ on their setups and here I was with minimal setup doing the same trail in reverse. it must be a semi popular trail I saw quite a few jeeps and 4 wheel drive vehicles. I cant seem to find any details on the trail, it was called moon gulch rd I believe and is off of CO-119 if anyone has info
interesting. how did you fasten the tent to the 2x4s? right now i have a 19 year that helps with me get mine on top my 3rd gen but he won't be around all the time so i am looking for alternative ways. mine won't fit in the garage either

I leave the roof rack cross bars mounted and essentially I did another set of crossbars but used the 10' long 2*4's. I ordered another set of sliders from CVT(I toyed with the idea of just drilling holes in the bottom but opted against this), and bought some bolts from lowes (cheaper). The original CVT brackets wont fit over a 2*4 so I also bought a similar item in the door/hinge section that was only $1 each. They are flimsy and cheap but work enough for the short time needed. I used regular nuts on these instead of the nylon ones so they slid off easier using my fingers. Mounted the 2*4's firmly and as you see in the video I just leaned it on the side of the rack then picked it up on to the roof. Once on the roof I loosened the nuts on one side leaving the bracket on for later then just pulled the 2*4's out. When I want to take it off I put the tent on its side on the roof rack to reverse the process.
one thing is you have to be super careful when sliding on/off cause the brackets will knick your rack. I slide it to the point of brackets touching then have to kind of walk it over the side of the rack to get in place.
another option I did before mounting the 2*4's and I had help. I still slid them under and with another person used those as handles. to me it was easier to use these as handles since theres nothing to really grab on to on the tent. We just stood behind the car tent flat on the 2*4's lifted up and over our heads and walked it over the roof. and same method to remove it.

holy sh**!!! so that's what you're suppose to do with the cover, roll it up. I have never seen a video where someone did that, usually they remove them. I was too lazy to remove mine and didn't want to store it anywhere so I have just let mine hang down.

We love it. The big named tents are all really close in most things. The reason we got this over others was the open sky feature with the rain fly off. We like to go to dark parks and see the stars when possible. Having the open sky makes the experience even better.
I dont think I'd be unhappy with most major brands, but the 23Zero had the most windows and was in stock when we wanted it, but I wouldnt give it up at this point in our lives. Until we decide to move to a larger pull behind I dont see a reason to change.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park. A really nice rural park with a very close proximity to Big South Fork and some pretty good fire roads.
Attached a pic of our setup at camp. The slope was a bit much but the annex floor had enough slack to keep a flat floor.
