Rooftop carrier bag reccomendations

Hey everyone...I know there have been threads about the hard rooftop carriers but I saw very little if anything on the collapsible bag type storage for the roof. Anyone have one that they love and would never part with? Any brands or particular models that are worth their weight in gold?

thinking something along the lines of these below. I trust the opinions of those on this forum more than anyone else and don't want to buy anything before I hear the good, bad and ugly from fellow T4R owners.

What do you use to protect the paint, or do these usually come with some sort of protection (film, micro-fibre bottom etc) ?
 
I have the Rightline Sport 3 and have used it a few times. Haven't gone through any downpours which is the big test you need. Would recommend using trash bags within the bag for clothes, etc. for extra protection. Use my Yakima rack for carrying the bag.
 
When I had my Xterra, i just placed the bag directly on the roof, between the roof rack cross bars. It didn't move around too much.

Then I got the Yakima Basket, that I put it in.

Then I got a Thule Atlantis cargo box. I haven't used the Thule bag since.
 
I guess in theory the bags are okay but what if you only have it filled 1/3 or 1/2 way? Does it just flap all around in the wind? If I needed to carry my stuff up there I think I'd want a hard top...no need for trash bags either.
 
that's a valid point Billy - in my research it looks like most of the reputable ones have straps that you can tighten down to account for the bag being emptier. For me my plan is to use this for beach "stuff" like chairs and the buggy for all my daughters stuff. That stuff takes up a lot of interior room so if I can toss it up top with no worry about it getting wet and have the ability to just pack the bag up and throw it in a closet is an ideal situation

I have the Rightline product you have in the first link.
I liked it a lot for what we used it for. We took it on our camping trip, I think we were actually able to fit more stuff in there than we would have in conventional cargo carrier. One reason being is that this is bendable material so you can stuff things in the all around and it's fine.

Like others have said on here, I wouldn't trust it through a rain storm or anything. What we did is put things that matter inside plastic bins, so even if it got a little wet, we should've been OK.

Here's the biggest problem with these types of carriers, something I didn't think about before buying (not that i would've stopped me from buying), is that you have to load it up before placing it on the roof. Why, because of a couple of reasons.. 1. zipping up the bag while it's on top of the car is difficult. 2. It's not stable on top of the car unless it's strapped down and you can't really strap it down unless it's closed and ready to go.

The straps aren't that difficult but I would say to practice a couple of times before you try to do it in hurry.

When we used it, I had the wife help me throw it on top of the truck and it took about 10 minutes of strapping it down.

Lastly, the other problem is that you can't empty it and drive around with it on top, than you would have a an empty piece of cloth flopping around. You dig?

Other than that, I like it a lot for what we are using it for and I think it's well worth $70. I found mine on craigslist.

I used this bag on top of my 3rd gen to hold two tent-cots on a trip to Alaska a couple of years ago. If there's extra space you definitely want to strap it down. I used two ratchet straps from Harbor Freight from corner to corner in an X pattern then used two bungies from side to side to kind of hold down the extra. Worked out pretty well for a 7,000 mile 20 day road trip. I had no complaints.
 
I have a Thule Force Cargo Box. It's the best hard shell cargo box you can find! It was a bit pricey, but it's always my recommendation because it's something really worth that money! And, probably the most important thing about it is that you can find it in a few different sizes. That means that everyone can find one that suits their cars.

I suppose there are some cheaper alternatives but you should take a look about some reviews of them. I can share a link of the website where I found some great information about cargo boxes and bags, so you can take a look.
