Rotors turned by Oriley auto parts

I have a 2 wheel drive 97 4runner v6

Sunday I was replacing my brake pads because they where just about to hit the warning tab. While they where out I took my rotors (Toyota Stock) to ORiley's auto parts to have they turned for $30. Now, prior to this I had no Problems with my brakes or any shake what so ever. But I had a smooth spot on the rotor so I wanted to clean them up. The young guys at ORiley's spent over 3 hours turning them saying that they where really warped and might not be able to be turned. After much grinding they where able to get them flat with plenty of material left with in limits. My initial thought was that they should not have been warped at all but I figured I must have been wrong. When I Got home I put them on, went around the block once with no problems. The next morning I got on the freeway and the first time I hit the brakes I had this huge shake in the brake petal. My thought is the ORiley's guys messed up my rotors and they where probably fine to began with. Now my rotors are bad. I called the store and they said they must have been to warped to began with, and that my brake pads had worn in a way to hide the warpage. Which is why I didn't feel the shake before. This makes no sense to me....

They have opted to give me a $30 store credit toward the Bosch rotors at $70 a piece. I don't know if they will give me my money back only credit. Are the Bosch ones ok with Toyota stock brake pads? Really I thinking they warped them and I should get cash back and go somewhere else. Any thoughts??

Also any recommendations for affordable struts and shocks? They are do to replace next.


UPDATE**

So years later I realize I never sent an update, After my last reply (2013), I went to the Auto yard like suggested and got a used set of Calipers, rotors, and brake pads off of a Tundra For a very decent price. I Kept them paired together, put them on thinking they would wear pretty fast being used, and I can say I still have pad left today. Have not had to change them yet. Doing the Upgrade was the best thing I could have done.

Use the $30 credit towards some 13WL calipers and do the Tundra brake upgrade. Just did mine and they are amazing.
 
I had really bad warping and had my rotors turned by Pep Boys weekend before last. I told the guy when I turned them in they were badly warped and when I picked them up later he confirmed that they were really warped. I had bad pulsating in the pedal before, and after turning the rotors it's nice and smooth (till they warp again eventually lol). I'd be pissed if I spent $30 to have them F up my perfectly good parts. I personally wouldn't spend more than $40 a rotor for new unless OEM, but you're better off upgrading to Tundra brakes with that kind of investment.

I just put on the Bosch QuietCast rotors. They were $55 a piece at O'Reilly's up in Chico. They work just fine, and will work with your OEM pads.
 
You can buy new rotors for about $40-50 (autozone), cheaper on ebay. NEVER ever turn rotors or drums, you'll regret it.
 
I went to O'Reilys last weekend when doing my girlfriend's brakes so they can turn the rotors. First of all, the $17 per rotor was a pretty ridiculous price. Idk what people are paying across the nation but I know a place 15 minutes from me that does it for $6. O'reilys is about 5 minutes away and it was late on a saturday so I figured I would try them out.

Anyway, since I was already there and the car taken apart back at home, I said go for it. They bring out the the caliper and measured the rotor. It was pretty close to being on its last turn, but there was enough material to turn them this one last time. He told me they couldn't do it because of this. The pads wore perfectly straight and there were no vibrations, he just didn't want to come close to the factory limit. He then pulled up the rotor options they had on the computer. This was obviously a plot to get me to buy new rotors. I picked them up off the shelf and told them i'd get it done somewhere else.

Drove, literally, across the street to a Just Brakes. It was 5:55 and they closed at 6. I asked them if they turned rotors and the said that he should be able to knock them out for me real quick. He brought me into the bay while he measured the rotors. He said it was close but he can try his best to get it within spec. Charged me $20 and even gave me a half full tube of brake grease for when i put everything back together.

At this point I was happy O'Reilys wouldn't turn them. Plus, I rather have someone that handles brakes all day work on my stuff, not some kid that works behind a counter looking up parts on the computer. I would look to see if there's a warranty at O'Reilys. They can't blame you or your rotors, if they were not turnable they should have not turned them.
 
It sounds like the guy didn't get them flat on the machine and added some warp for you. Those Bosch rotors look nice - I bought a set to put on mine when it started sqeaking (but when I pulled the calipers the pads were almost new and just needed a little 'brake sqeaky' so I returned them). I'd be pretty firm with the manager that they destroyed your rotors and if they want any more business (and don't want posts like this) he should give you OEM quality rotors (i.e. the Bosch rotors). I've done a lot of business with them and they always make things as right as they can (and in this case, they can :p).

You can have my stock rotors if you want. They had no vibrations when I used them last and only took them off to do the Tundra brakes. Just pay shipping and they are yours. I can't guarentee they won't vibrate, but I never had an issue when they were on mine. Worse thing is you pay for shipping and then bring them into O'Reilly's to be turned (which they should do for free). Let me know and mine are for a 16" wheel.

This.

You're always going to end up with warped rotors if you stay with stock calipers/pads/rotors. If you're looking to hold on to the 4Runner, the cost of the upgrade will likely pay for itself with the rotors you WON'T be buying over and over. Plus you'll have a ton more brake power.

Thanks for all the input. After reading all the posts and talking to Les Schwab ( the ones that told me my brake pads where getting low) im going to call tomorrow and stand my ground. I think at the very least I get my $30 put towards the Bosh rotor. I buy one they buy one. Though really in the end they should have to buy both. The Les Schwab guy said if it where them they would buy me new rotors no question. And that that is just good customer service.

I didn't know about the upgrade. I already bought the Toyota pads for $80 and have had them on for 3 days so I will skip the upgrade for now but will do it next brake change. Is it just a caliper & rotor change? I will have to look into it. Any suggestions for shocks?
 
DO THE TUNDRA UPGRADE, it is the single best mod i've done to my truck, I wished I had done it sooner.

Talked to a manager. Say there guys didn't mess up my rotors. That they had to be warped before they turned them. All they will do is give me $30 credit towards the Bosh ones. And take an addition $5 off per rotor. Which comes out to me paying an additional $80 for the rotors. They are saying the old brake pads had to be warn with the warp and hid them from being warped before. I told him Toyota and Les schwab both said that's not true and it sounds like they messed them up. He said well there is nothing we can do. So I got the name for the store manager, time to go up the chain. Mean while my brand new brake pads from The Toyota dealer are getting thrashed. What happened to good customer service? I don't have extra cash to throw around. Id love to do the upgrade, But $500 is a lot to throw down right now.

You can do it for way less.

2 junkyard calipers $50-$75 ea
2 Napa rotors $56 ea
autozone gold tundra brake pads $65

Total could be as low as $277. depending on how cheap you can find the calipers or if you get cheaper pads it could be even less.
 
Did you use a torque wrench when installing the wheels? I use to have a shop do mine, sometimes it worked other times the warp came back later. I now just buy new rotors. Find a good import parts store in town. I only purchase from Bap Geon in Va Beach. Akebono pads and rotors they stock. Most come from China these days.

I think its funny when people say this. Even the Toyota Junkyards have a hard time getting Tundra's, and the ones they have are always too trashed. I looked for 3 months before biting the bullet on new parts.

I found good ones at the first junkyard I went to. Used car-parts and located 10 sets on my way to Atlanta. Although I agree most junkyards misrepresent their parts if you call and ask. Made that mistake on a sport hood.

New remaned ones are not too bad though at $82 after refunded core charge.

I guess location has something to do with it. I've never seen a tundra or taco at self-serve yards tho, and i go quite a bit. I've seen 3rd gens only a handful of times. However, toyota trucks are in high demand in denver. it may be that they too high sell at auction for the yards to want to bite. car-part is a cool tool too, but even when i searched on there they were either too far or too expensive. If i ever see a tundra at a self serve yard tho, i'm pulling the calipers and post them in the classifieds :cheers:

I have a junkyard in my area, Pick-N-Pull, and they rarely have any Tacomas, 4Runners, or Tundras in stock. They usually have 1 4Runner a month, and its torn apart the first 3 days of its arrival. The average year of them is '94-'98, and they are base models.

I asked one of the employees/yard supervisors why they never have 4Runners or Tacomas, and he said that once a Toyota is totaled, there is a service yard in California that buys them, and all totaled trucks, SUVs, and newer cars get shipped to this California Toyota lot.

I'm going to assume that Toyota wants all of their totaled vehicles leaving the East Coast, and North-East, to avoid rust and further damaging "salvageable" vehicles, and California is perfect for preservation.

But I cannot locate this mecca of Toyota vehicles in one junkyard, so I'm assuming its an Area 61 scenario.
