Rough paint/clear on rear hatch normal?

So I have had my 4runner for a few months and I noticed some very rough paint on the rear hatch around the area where the plastic 4runner fascia sits, it's a good size area on nearly the entire rear hatch but mainly the area that spans about 8" from the bottom of the rear window all the way across. I originally thought I must have driven through some tar and it was just dirty but now after a few washes this is clearly an issue with the paint or clear coat and it's not sanded smooth...its almost sand like. Is this normal on this area? To give you an idea, running a microfiber cloth over the paint it grabs like crazy and pulls off bits of the cloth.

Should I try to fix this myself or do you think a dealer would take care of this? It's obviously a defect but I'm not sure they would touch it. Any ideas?

This might be too simple of an answer, but have you tried detailing clay? I'm not sure how bad what you're describing is.

I've got a small rough spot on the left of the garnish, but that was from the garnish rubbing into the paint. Had to pull the garnish, replace it to get rid of the gap it had and then sand the area smooth and touch up. Unfortunately I touched up a little too much and it is somewhat noticeable. I might try to smooth the touch up out with something, I dunno. Rest of the tailgate is smooth although there looks like some sand under the paint or something on the lower edge.

Mine is like this too. Clay and wax did not fix it. Must be a paint defect.

could it be small rust spots starting under the paint? mine had a ton of iron in the paint when i bought it, and i know some people are having rust issues on their rear tailgate

My 2017 was covered in rust spots (rail dust). It stood out like a sore thumb on cement.

maybe it is rail dust, I hadn't heard of this before but searched on it and seems to be similar to what is going on...I'll try to get some pics later - truck is black so it's not noticeable but you can definitely feel it

Finally got around to giving a nice hand wax I was able to buff off the rail dust. Odd that it was only on the rear hatch, I remember my VW had the same problem but it was all over the car. I just figured it was some kind of road debris I didn't realize there was such a thing as rail dust but it makes sense.

Mine was rail dust and particulate that settled on the back during driving. I regularly have to use IronX and claybar the area. I think it's also about time to reapply my CQuartz to that area. It just seems prone to getting gunked due to where the exhaust is and how the air flows over that area during driving.

these vehicles do collect much road debris on the rear hatch. rail dust ? I find the term rail dust hard to under stand . you work or park in an area near trains ? I did for almost 30 yrs . .

the dust if iron can be from the brake pads/rotors.

you use a commercial car wash or you do this yourself on the washing ?

the car wash systems can also cause this effect with this vehicle design.

I would not use a clay bar on a new ride .........or any other abrasive material .

try some 3M finish glaze compound and a black foam pad.
use high quality car wash soap that protects the paint not any acid cleaners .. I have no problems so far 9 months old debris flows off the rear hatch with a good hit of the water nozzle.

Check the bolts that connect the hatch to the rear of the truck. If those are gnarled it's possible it was damaged in transport and they took it off to repaint it. Also rub your finger nail on that upper lip where it meets the roof and see if it is rough. This is another sign it may have been repainted and the "roughness" you're feeling may be "trash" (dust particles) in the paint from the respray.

The rail dust is usually from the actual transport of the truck.

It's also a common word for shit from brakepads and even "space fallout".

so what did the toyota dealership recommend on the handling of this. I just inspected my vehicle just now AGAIN to see if this is on MY 2016 7K miles ..

there are all kinds of sources of ferrous particles in a developed area, you don't need to be near a rail yard and your vehicle doesn't ever have to have been transported on the train. Regular road debris or even rain could be the source.

And FYI, this kind of rusting is explicitly excluded in your warranty

so 2 miles on a toyota vehicle with paint defects NOT covered ?

lets say your roof starts peeling less than 1 month old , NO rust , you say toyota will not cover it ?

I am going to call up my dealership and ask about this . if it is true this thing is gone .............

Read the warranty book in your glovebox, it's only covered if it rusts all the way through

From page 14-15 of the warranty book:

Corrosion Perforation Warranty
This warranty covers repair or replacement

subject to the exceptions indicated under
“What Is Not Covered” on pages 14-15.

when the vehicles are being transported from japan they are exposed to those environmental contaminates so toyota is responsible .

there should be a class action lawsuit against Toyota if this is affecting many owners with NEW vehicles less than a year old on the rear hatch.
It is expected that this toyota vehicle is for exterior use .
