Rough upper dash trim normal or defective?

The dark colored, textured part above the clock, or the light silver painted part below the clock? The painted silver part should be smooth, the textured dark part is, textured.

Definitely not normal. Is it maybe something stuck to the surface? Can you scrape it off?
Age of vehicle? New or used?
 
Yep. Mines a little rough there too. Like a poor paint job.
Behind the steering wheel is really annoying, like fingers on a chalkboard when I'm cleaning it.
 
My '10 has it too. It's not rough like sandpaper, but the texture is a little more "dull" than the face of the trim.
 
Several areas of the silver trim, including that one, are rough on mine. Normal for the cheap paint and process they used. What really bugs me is the gaps between the upper and lower part of the dash, as well as the thin plastic cover in the back parts of the steering wheel that can easily be deformed and moved around with a light touch. The interior fit and finish in some areas are downright embarrassing.

I understand you're quite skeptical of Toyota's quality and all that, but seriously do you think they just happen to do a shoddy paint job on that one particular section where glare could be an issue (on every single dash piece built for that matter)? :caked:

I am almost positive the textured finish is for glare reduction, along with the black trim piece directly in front of it being a matte finish. I have horrible glare on the display screen after covering the black piece with 3M di-noc, lol.
 
I noticed it shortly after buying my '13 TE. I just assumed it was anti slip in case you shove your phone/wallet etc in there.

To the OP:
I think it's normal. Mine is the same, and I can't find rough areas like that on anything else.

Willy, I don't have any gaps between the upper and lower part of my dash, but the plastic covers on the back of my steering wheel do move exactly as you stated (I checked after I read your post), although I'm not sure that's a problem, except for potential rattles.
 
Mine is the same....Starting to see a pattern here :) Also, I would like to know why they went through all the trouble of making this one little piece textured, but could not be bothered to install a radio that's visible with sunglasses on. LOL
