RSCA Off

Hi,

About to do some 4-wheeling for the first time in my new 4runner. I will be comparing it to my 98 4runner on roads that I know well in the Sierras.

I wonder if anyone has any real experience with RSCA. (Roll sensing side curtain airbags)

1. Has anyone ever had the airbags go off while 4-wheeling?
2. How severe should the sidehill be to warrant turning it off?
3. Does anyone just leave it on and never have a problem?

When I bought my new 4runner the service manager told me to play it safe, turn the side curtains off. Very expensive when it does activate and the side curtains are really only there for side collisions on the street. I'd turn em off if I were going on very uneven roads.

I'll leave mine on for the flat dirt roads, when I know I'll be tilting the 4Runner in off camber situations, I always switch the airbags off. Like Grizz said better safe than sorry, Airbags in general are expensive and these ones I'm sure cost a pretty penny. I have no idea what angle they would engage at but, I prefer not to find out.

Just remember that RSCA re-engages I think after so many mph, and are re-enabled every time you restart your 4Runner.

There's one story, way back when where a 4th gen had the side-airbags blow. It cost her serious money.

IIRC it was an OME equipped Runner and she pulled off the shoulder onto the grass at a good clip. There was a fair amount of drop-off and a little 'dip'. All of those things were enough to do it.

I don't advocate it, but number 3 is me (4th gen).

Truck has more than 4k off-pavement miles in a wide range of conditions.

I'd still suggest getting in the habit of turning them off, though. If you don't, you won't.

my dealer also highly advised me to turn it off during off road conditions. I went over a good size speed bump not straight on and yellow lights came up on my dash board and funny noised came from down below my leg area. I thought for sure they would trip.

All that you heard and saw is just the stability control or the traction control. One of the two or both, I every now and then hit some pretty good pot holes and experience the same thing.

Did the 4th gens have this RCSA button too, I don't recall seeing it in my buddy's 07'.

I turn them off ('08 SR5 4X4). I saw the after effects on my neighbors Titan. Not to mention that if they hit you or your passengers they can do damage.

Some friends in Qatar went on a dune bashing trip in a 2010 Land Cruiser. The driver came off a dune at a slight angle, and when he hit the hardpan at the bottom, the side airbags deployed. Expensive for the owner, and minor, but painful, abrasions for the passengers. I owuld probably turn off th eside airbags off road.
