Flush All Your Fluid
I would first start with doing a full transmission fluid flush, make sure you get all of the old bad transmission fluid out of the transmission. You cant just put 2 oz of additive into completely shot fluid which at full capacity of the transmission is 102.4 oz and expect it to work. Also do not put in Toyota Type WS brand fluid in it, that fluid is garbage. Use Castrol to start and run that for the first 5,000 miles, and then dump it and put either the same stuff in or AMSOIL. A note on this so called lifetime fluid - Toyota Type WS, it's speculated that Toyota means lifetime of the powertrain warranty which is only 100k IF you fall under the normal style driving(nobody does), so that brings it down to the severe powertrain warranty which is only 60k max. So unless you have a temp guage to watch your tranny temp and know how many times the temp of your tranny fluid went above the threshold of the Type WS you should have probably changed it earlier than 60k. Now after you do this fluid change it will take a good 100 miles to work its magic by cleaning everything and get the transmission working like normal. Once that first fluid gets a chance to wash all the parts there will be residual dirty fluid leftover from cleaning everything. Then you put in the new stuff and you'll be good to go. BTW I never even used the shudder fix, just changed all of the fluid and was good to go. Goodluck!
My V8/Sport 4wd still has a torque converter shudder. Had the driveshaft balanced, tried shudder fix too. We have 148k miles on it and currently planning to get a couple quotes. The first shop, which comes highly recommended said $3600-$3800 for a rebuilt trans. I’m sorry, I’m not dumping 4 grand into a truck that’s maybe worth 6-7 grand. I’m hoping I can get this problem resolved for less than 3 grand. My other issue is, what’s next? I know it needs a power steering pump. This is where my husband and I disagree. He doesn’t see anything wrong with dumping thousands into a car that is 14 years old as long as we don’t have a payment. We do tow with it and need 4wd. My feeling is, if the problem can be fixed for a few grand, fine. However, are we putting off the inevitable? At some point, we’re going to have to do something.
I work for Nissan (ironic? Isn’t it?) and I can get a titan for dealer cost with zero percent 60mo financing. I don’t want a car payment. Nobody does. But I don’t want to dump thousands into a 14, almost 15 year old car. Does anyone have a thought? Keep your fingers crossed as in a couple weeks, I should know what our options are.
