Running 33's on 22" wheels

Just seeing if anyone has this combo. Looking at 285/50/22 Nitto Terra Grappler tires on a 22" X 9" KMC Skitch chrome wheels.

Yes, it is the wifes' rig and she wants some bling!

A 285/50/22 is a 33.22" diameter tire. Too big IMO without some pretty major work. Anything over a 33" with a 9 " wide rim will get rubbing on the body mounts at the rear of the front wheel well when at full lock.More Pos. caster setting,pulling the front liner forward 1/2" or so and major plastic surgery in the rear wheel well with a body mount chop will fix that though.

Best bet is to find a smaller diameter tire,like a 285/45/22 that is 32.09" dia!

What are the other specs on the KMC Skitch's , like backspace and center bore? Optimum is 4.5" backspace(translates to -12 offset on a 9 inch wide rim) with a 106.25mm or larger bore.

Here is the info on the KMC Skitch, 106.25mm bore, +15 offset.

My tires now are 11.2 wide and 31.9 tall.
Nitto 285/50/22 are 11.5 wide and 33.2 tall.

Difference of .3" in width and 1.3" in height. My tires now look smaller then expected with the lift.

This is the offset recommended by three tire shops.

Am I missing something here?

I don't know about the specific size issues but they do seem a little large for our 4Runners. One thing I am sure of, and no offense is intended, those are some damn ugly wheels, again, especially on a 4Runner.

Does the shops that recommended the offset look to see what your stock backspace is ?
The stock backspace is 4.5" and on a 7 inch wide rime that translates to a +12 but that's on a 7 inch wide rim. Why wheel manufacturers even give offset is beyond me anyways as it changes according to rim width. Back space is what important as it tells where the wheel fits inboard or outboard from stock.Here is info on wheel tech. https://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html

So if you have +15 offset with a 9 inch wide rim that translates to about a 5.6" backspace, which is what a OEM Chevy/GM backspace is. That means you are moving the wheel inwards over an inch from the stock 4.5" backspace.Now,go out and look at your clearance between the inside of the tire and the UCA and do the math if it was 1+ inches inward with a wider/fatter tire. It will rub or be dangerously close to the UCA unless you get spacers to move it outward.

Here is a pic of where I'm talking about and I have 4.1" back space on these wheels and the fatter part is below where this pic shows. So , figure 1 1/2 inches inward is where 5.6" back space wheels will sit. I have a set of 4th Gen Sport wheels that have 5.25" back space and can barely get a pinkey finger between the tire and the UCA.

Thanks for the input Harper7. Be doing some research on back space today and see exactly what you are talking about. Local Discount Tire wanted to sell me some +35 9" wheels. I don't think these would even be able to mount.

9" wide wheel equals a negative off set for correct back spacing.

Going to be sticking with a 20" wheels and either another set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's in 275/60/20 or 285/55/20 Nitto Terra Grappler tires for summer shoes. Keeping the stock 20's with the 275/55/20 Silent Armor's for winter.

Any ideas for buying another set of TPMS stems?

You could but why not just swap the stock ones? My wheel guy did it for no charge. Also you wont need to reset the computer then.

Trying to keep two seperate sets of wheel/tire combos. We have a cabin at high elevation in the central Idaho mountains, have to go over a couple of passes which still have about six feet of snow. Want to run winter set Nov 1st to May 1st then put nice wheels on.

I guess Harper7 has more reading for me to do. Thanks for all your help.
