Running boards coming off today!

Finally taking those tacky ass running boards off, anything besides taking a few bolts off to look for? Seems like the most simplistic of tasks almost always ends up making me crazy b/c of something stupid.

Penetrating oil on bolts a couple hours before you wrench on it and it's easy.

I hit them with some PB Blaster a couple days ago and will again at least an hour before I start for sure. I noticed a bolt cover (?) just on mounts closest to the front tires...is that what that is?

I can't even remember, just that it took 5 minutes to take them off and now they're living in the rafters of my garage. Anyone actually want some RBs? I'll make you a real good deal.

They're really not *that* tacky. Definitely keep some salt spray off of the frame rails in winter.

IMO they are pretty damn tacky, they scream mall crawler/soccer mom. Also, I am in "The South", so we rarely have salt even in winter, and I regularly wash and wax.

edit; Frame rails, I don't wax those but I do keep my truck very clean top to bottom and under carriage.

They can think i drive a mall crawler with mud up the sides, dents in the fenders and tree branch scratches on the doors.

That's great and all, the point is that I personally don't like the look of them and they serve no purpose other than a tiny step and adding more weight to my truck.

Yes, I noticed my truck was way faster and got better mpg when I ditched the immense weight of the running boards. Sliders and bumpers are much lighter anyway.

This forum cracks me up sometimes.

Haha! You had me with the first sentence. Then I continued..
I was like, oh c'mon man you know DAMN well!

I took mine off yesterday... rusty bolts -_-

There are 3 connecting points

Front connection (1) bolt and welded nut and (1) nut with welded bolt

The center and rear connections both have 2 bolts and 2 nuts

wire brush everything....free all / pb blaster tap with a hammer it then wrench it!

Took my running boards off today. Break Free CLP for a couple hrs, still were a pain to get off. Blacked out my badges too.

Took mine off a long time ago!

I actually sold mine today for $60 bucks!!! Super excited about it- I had them listed on CL for 2 months...

The guy I sold em to had a really nice 01 lifted with BFG 285's

Hit my bolts with PB BLaster, life got busy so they soaked for about a few days...11mm socket and they came right off. Looks good.

Looks nice man! So when you guys black out your badges...are you just taping off the area around them and spraying, then digging the paint/dip out from the detailed parts with like a toothpick or something?

Just noticed your constructive comment and yeah I'd say the running boards are roughly 20lbs ea., so taking 40lbs off your rig would marginally help with gas mileage...still no reason to be a dick.

I would not even say marginally. That is 30-40lb or so on a 4000lb truck. 40lb isn't even the weight of an adult passenger. You aren't going to gain gas mileage by ditching something the weight of a kid.
