My reason as well, installed my running boards 2nd day I owned my truck.

BTW, that looks like a GM seat.

Guys I'm 53 and have no problem getting into the 4Runner. A few years ago with some busted ribs and broken shoulder yeah, it took a minute to get in but even after several beers I even get into the passenger side just fine. Yes, I admit, if parked off camber then I might use the steering wheel on occasion lol.

The OP wanted something for himself as a driver. I agree with kids, old people, fat asses, short spouses and just out of shape you need something.

True, I want this for my 5' 6" self.

I wonder how tall you are?

Just as tall drivers of Miatas must mod the car so they can comfortably fit, so must shorter drivers of raised vehicles.
 
I agree with the ass dragging. Plus, running boards can help for those times when an idiot swings their doors open when they part next to you. Depending on the door shape, it's their door that will catch hell and not yours!!
 
I hit a fudging pole trying to pull into a car wash stall. The sound was awful and I felt the car jolt. When I got out, I was confused because I didn't see anything on first look. I actually had a pretty good scratch on the plastic trim on the door but it's hardly noticeable. And my n-fab bar which took most of the brunt had all the paint/truck liner chipped on the step with a small inward dent. My car would have been ****ed up if it wasn't for the running boards.

Again, I'm 5' 6" and I can get in without a step or grab bar but it'd be easier if I had either or both.

I'm again 'guessing' that if you are 5' 9" or taller you probably don't need either.

Funny opposite problem, people who are taller have problems fitting into the new Miata ND. There are discussions about lowering the seats, removing padding from the seat, raising the rear view mirror... ect....

I'm a long legged 5'8" and have no problem getting into the vehicle. However, I have thought about running boards to assist in getting out to minimize the butt drag over the edge of the seat. I also thought that they might help in accessing the roof top and tying things down on a rack, but the 5th gen is to tall for that (at my height). BTW, I keep my NB Miata seats one notch from fully back.
 
The OEM Rigid Running boards are great for several practical every day uses for me and my family.

I am 6'1 and I love how I can wash the top of the 4Runner or load items on the rack by the help of the running boards.

They also help my 2 year old and my 5'4" wife get in and out of the 4Runner. Very family friendly!

Keep in mind they do a great job of blocking rocks from hitting the door bottoms and sides while driving on trails or when the tires eject stuck rocks while on the freeway.

Even in parking lots they help protect from door dings as most people's car doors will hit the running boards before hitting the door panels. This is a huge plus for me. I rather have trail damage any day over having someone dent my door because they are careless and disrespectful.

The OEM running boards tuck up high against the body so they have not effected ground clearance.

I don't use the steering wheel or butt slide over the side of the seat. I just plant the right foot and up into the seat. I guess this is why I don't think an a pillar grab handle is all that useful, at least to me anyway, given the awkward leverage point it would provide.
