Rust on lower parts 07 4runner should use POR15?

Hi i have 07 4runner and it shows some spots of rust on shocks back side of wheel hubs front suspension parts near wheels,hitch and some parts of frame...I was reading some reviews and saw many ppl talking about POR15...any one who has done undercoat using POR15? would appreciate if you guide me how to start and should i undercoat compleately or the spots where i see rust..and how much and what POR15 product should i buy? can I do it my self as i dont have lift.

what year is your vehicle?

I would love to have to my under carriage look like yours.

I've heard POR 15 is very messy and a pita to use. Have not used it myself.

I would sand it off and use a spray paint for an undercarriage....

Use chassis saver. Google it. Like port but suppose to be better. I did my 04 this summer. Nice. 1 quqrt will do all underneath. Its a mess going on but nice.

Looks like my Undercarriage. I live in Canada so it figures but compared to my 2002 Honda accord it's disappointing to see so much rust!

its quite strange that rust comes so quick on 4runners its only 2007 model..

so have you done anything to prevent rust on your 4runner?

No. I just powerwash all the time in the winter and summer but beyond that I don't do much. It really is just SURFACE Rust...so it's unsightly but I don't think it should do much harm...unless you plan on keeping your rig for 25 years!

My concern re: POR-15 is one needs to be really careful not to get the stuff on any nuts or bolts that will need to be removed someday for any routine maintenance. The stuff dries really hard.

I have an '04 that is like new except for the same rust that you have. Mine was actually a little worse, but I spent a weekend underneath the 4runner painting everything with POR 15 and it looks great. It is messy and if it gets ln your skin it stays until it wears off. The stuff is tough and you cant beat it off with a hammer. I highly recommend it. Just get a quart of the semi gloss and their cleaner, you dont need the metal prep. It is a lot of work, but well worth it in the end.

WOW, the photos you posted of your 4Runner Rust look EXACTLY the way my '04 4Runner looked after the SAME 3-4 years on the road. I live in Eastern Pennsylvania, BTW.

FYI, I was at my Toyota Dealer tonight looking at Tundra pickups.
Just for grins I looked under some 2007 & 2008 Tundras on the used car lot.
Other people on the lot must have thought I was nuts when they heard me laughing my butt off. Seems that the used Tundras of that vintage have the same rust in the same places as my 4Runner at that same age.

BTW, some here with older 4Runners in Rust Belt States might want to check out their steering column linkage. The "surface rust" on mine suggests to me that this might be one of Toyota's future safety recalls.

hey charlieR180 so you used POR15 only on rear end so how does your 4runner looks now at those parts has the rust come back? peobably you used it 3 to 4 years ago...and yes the sliding yoke on steering shaft looks almost same at my 4runner but not as bad as shown in your pic...

I used their Marine Clean degreaser. . . .it works great. Yex, I painted everything except the front differential and brake calipers. Its a lot of work , but take it one section at a time.

I just bought a 4Runner from Kansas City that looks just about identical to that rust. It's a shame because the rest of it's in great shape. I just ordered some POR-15 after doing some research. Hopefully it'll take care of it permanently. I live in Texas so I don't have to worry about salt, I just want to prevent it from getting any worse.

Good stuff

I used Black Semigloss POR-15 (more like satin almost) on my hitch and the sides of my frame rails awhile back and it turned out great.

No complaints.

Im planning on doing the same thing to my trailer hitch (still trying to get the 7-pin plug L-bracket off first, as it's rusted to hell) and id like to go under my 03 and do the frame area around & beneath the radiator.

My question: Do you sand, scrape and prime the area at all?
