Rust on My New 4Runner

I read in another thread about past rust issues on newer Toyotas. Well guys, I know you all love me so much already because I haven't been 100% positive about my new 4Runner, but here's a live pic of the left lower control arm. Notice the rust on the weld joint? Also on the casting in the upper left corner of the pic where the CV joint plugs into the wheel hub. There are bare spots like this all over the powder-coated frame, already showing rust. I have a whopping 300 miles on my TE. Warranty issue? Don't worry about it? It's definitely rust! BTW, no excuse for salted roads or harsh winter environments where I live: Lower Mohave Desert! BTW, this is on the backside of the control arm so it's not getting hit by all the crap that flies up from the road.

If you don't like it, get something else.

Metal will rust. Period. Humidity, salt in the air, etc will make it rust. It's surface rust. It isn't anything to worry about.

Sorry to be blunt, but if you don't like it sell it, trade it, whatever and move on.
 
Any type of water will rust metal. Car wash, rain anything even in the desert. Don't worry :) you can if you want go to a shop and rust proof under the truck, I don't know what it's called but it cost me 200$ to do it. Toyota dealer will charge you around 500$ it protects everything under the truck. I went to my dad's friend who takes care of his 10 wheeler and he made me a good deal. It's some wax product mixed to alcohol to spray it all over , he put that stuff everywhere.

You've got to be kidding me. Ever hear of powder coat? Rust-proofing? The metal shouldn't be rusted because it's supposed to be protected. Look, if the rusting is due to paint being chipped off from normal wear and tear that's one thing, because the protective coating has been knocked off. This is a brand new vehicle and I said there were spots like these all over the frame. There's nothing normal about rusted parts straight from the factory with the exception of on things that will normally accumulate some amount of rust--like disc brake rotors, spring surfaces (not coil springs), or other minor items where rusting is not severely detrimental. The rust on the weld joints is likely due to improper prepping of the metal for painting with the powder coat. You'd know this if you knew anything about painting metal. It could also be due to careless handling/installation after it was painted. As for you guys who think this is "normal", yeah, for Toyota, I guess. BTW, all, I see you already jumping on my back again. So this will be my last post on this thread. Troll away if you like. Photo speaks for itself. Oh, sorry to be blunt.

Its you who knows nothing about this subject. Take it back to the dealer so he can laugh at you...again.

Let's see, so far you:
Are unnderpowered
Have too little ground clearance
Are rusting away

What's next? Seats? Stereo?

I absolutely agree, this photo does speak for itself in more ways than you think.

You should definitely attach a copy of this photo to that letter you are writing to Toyota corporate so they can better understand where you are coming from and whom they are dealing with.

And you posted in the other thread yet still felt the need to start a new one about the exact same subject.

You may live in the Mojave where there's no salt on the roads but where do you think your 4Runner was built? Coastal city in Japan? And how do you think that 4Runner got to Arizona all the way from Japan? Possibly on a boat? Across the Pacific Ocean? Hmm, what are those ocean things made of again? Salt water maybe?

I had the same problem on my 07 FJ. Sanded off what I could and hit the majority of the undercarriage with high temp BBQ grill Rustoleum flat black - great stuff and cheap to touch up spots that pop up later.

As folks mentioned earlier in other threads, surface rust is really not a big deal. You will trade this vehicle in or sell it by the time structural integrity becomes an issue.

If you are truly concerned about the LCA - because it is an eye sore, total chaos makes a direct bolt on replacement.

Honestly that really isn't anything to be concerned about even on a new truck. I have had a a new 2013 SR5 exactly two weeks and crawled under it the day I drove it home and it wasn't perfect either. If you went to complain to Toyota or a dealer I doubt they would do anything...

You should come to Iowa and see what a truck that has lived through just one Iowa winter looks like underneath.
 
This is normal surface rust. Go enjoy your new truck! And next time you worry about your Toyota holding-up, turn to CNN and watch those crazy bastards in the Middle East beating the living piss out of theirs. If these trucks can hold-up through that kind of abuse, they can handle your weekend camping trips just fine.
 
I'm shocked and outraged. I've got zero rust on my 99 Trooper! This is unacceptable and not normal, despite the fact that many others have seen similar rust spots. I bet that rust will accumulate and further reduce the ground clearance. I'm going to complain to others online but then get super defensive when nobody else has an irrational and excessive reaction like mine.

BTW, Does anyone have any paper? My letter to Toyota is getting LONG...
