Rust Removal/Prevention

New frame, leaf springs, lower control arms, brake and fuel lines, some wiring harnesses, drive like a new truck. Off topic I know.

I've used this in the past. I spray paint the bottom of my tuck every Spring as well. Did this with my 97 T4R that I had for 16 years.

On the Classic car forums there is a product called POR-15 by the Eastwood Company, it is meant to be Painted Over Rust and stop it. Might be worth looking into I haven't used it myself but from what I've read it is a pretty reputable product. Don't get it on your skin though, from what I've read it'll be there until you shed that layer of skin :twitch:

Hello all. I bought a used 2011 (~ 33k miles) 5th Gen 4runner Trail for about $27k (before taxes) about a month ago. The 4runner I think was bought for a decent deal; no nav, has sunroof, base seats, ect. but everything looked to be in good shape and runs fine.


The one thing that concerned me slightly was the rust on the undercarriage/frame. This 4runner was bought in upstate NY, so rust is going to happen. I was aware of it before I made the purchase, so this not a surprise to me, but I was intending to clean up the underside and rust-proof, as much as possible, the vehicle. Here is what I am dealing with:




My question: What options do I have for cleaning off this rust and preventing rust in the future? Anyone have any recommendations for products/ procedures that worked well for them? Please note that I had the flash on, so the rust parts were highlighted somewhat; they stand out more in these pictures than they do in real life.

I am realistic on this. I realize I won't get all the rust off, and I realize that eventually more rust will get on there (this is the Northeast after all).

Yeah! I was just mentioning this in another post with a guy who has severe rust. He won't tell anyone where he lives and I was just trying to help him. His valve covers are turning white from the oxidation too so wherever he lives is super bad place. Look at his valve cover

POR-15 is the truth! Put it on my frame about 4 years ago and no more rust!
