Hey there,

My name is Max, I live in Montréal, Canada. I'm studying in mechanical engineering but I am by no means experienced with cars. I read stuff on forums and I just shia labeouf it. I appologize in advance if I make mistakes, english is my second language.

Adventure begins, went and bought a 99 SR5 5MT for 1900 canadian pesos ($1385 US).

Right off the bat, there is a couple of issues.

1: P0171 code
2: Hesitation
3: Stinks of old doge
4: Rear gate latch does not lock
5: Rear wiper is RIP

I got a bluetooth adapter and scanned the CEL and got p0171, common code. I went ahead and did this nice laundry list of stuff :

MAF and TB cleanup (MAF twice to get rid of hesitation)
Seafoam
BG44k
PCV valve and grommet change
New plugs and wires
Fuel filter
Re-wire negative battery terminal
Fluid change for rear diff, transfer case and transmission
New upstream 02 sensor
Got used gate locking mechanism from ebay and installed

First adventure : 02 sensor from hell.

Now, there is a reason why this thread is called RustRunner, you will see why right now.

Pretty happy about the result, I was very lucky to find two studs and nuts around the basement for this to work. It took me longer to shear of the two nuts on the sensor and remove the mid-pipe than to drill, tap and install the new 02 sensor.

Here is the album of the pictures for the 02 sensor job if you are interested:

The next adventure will be even better !

Join me next time when I will struggle from 1pm to 5am to drill-out and re-tap TWO exhaust studs.

Second adventure : Y-pipe studs

Continuing where we left off, I started drilling the first stud out.

Got all the way through. This took about an hour believe it or not.

I had to make a cutom drill bit attachement to reach into the space to drill the last stud out

I didin't take any pictures of the actual process of drilling because my hands were to dirty, but it took 2 hours alone.

Here is a picture of the tap in the flange

I had to use unorthodox methods to drive the tap correctly in with the non-existent space I had.

Everything is installed and good now. This took me from 1pm to 5am, so 16hrs of torture.

Here is the picure album for the whole process
