S.S. Minnow Build Thread

I said road, not trail, you goofball. You know, pavement, asphalt, concrete. That stuff that gets slippery as hell when it ices over. I'm expecting the automatic locker to play hell with your traction when you get on the slick stuff :D, and if it doesn't then I may look into doing that myself instead of modifying my housing for an elocker.

Definitely go with the selectable locker if you can, KidV--mechanicals are a compromise anytime slippery asphalt comes into play, and demand a careful right foot and watchful eye. They're worth the compromise once you're offroad, if the budget won't allow a switched unit.
 
Honestly, we get very little snow or rain here (south of Colorado Springs). So I don't worry much about it. We are in some sort of weather bubble due to the way the mountains wrap around us.

Having the auto locker has definitely changed my street driving. I take corners VERY slow now so I don't destroy my tires. It won't see much road over the next 9 months. When my wife gets back from serving in Afghanistan, I hope to have a new DD. I'll be driving her Mazda Potege5 while she is gone.

We did cross some wicked ice fields last Friday. As long as take it easy, there is no issue. The Jeep slid all over them. He was running KM2's vs my AT's. That may have made a difference.
 
Tomorrow starts build week 2! Keeping it fairly simple this week.

Stripping off all the Duplicolor bed armor with wire wheel and paint stripping wheel. Hopefully that will scuff the surface enough this time.

Re-cover my 4 rust spots. Honestly, I'm just hoping to stop the rust. I plan on painting right over them for now. I'd love to get fiber glass fenders someday. As for the door spots, I could care less since I am getting tube doors.

ROLL on Herculiner instead of using rattle can. With a 4" roller, I should get exactly what I need over the fenders. I'm going to tape slightly higher than needed and try not to make it look like a fade instead of a dead stop line. The look should be the same though.

Paint over spots on the front and rear bumper that I scratched up wheeling.

Install new CB. It's already wires, but not actually attached to anything yet. I doubt that sitting in the passenger seat is the best place for it.
 
I would avoid herculiner and go with Monstaliner. I used monstaliner because they are about the same price as Herculiner and they are UV Permanent. Monstaliner will not fade, they have a bunch of colors, and the texture from the coating comes from the brush. No rubber crumb b/s in Monstaliner. Great info, SV! I'm wanting to do the bedliner along the lower portion, too, and really don't know what to look for.
 
I don't think I could be any happier with how mine turned out. It cleaned up the inside so much and the outside looks great too! It's easy to apply and comes at a great price!
 
So the liner is coming out good now that I have the 2nd coat on. I was a little worried after the first coat. I'll post pics when it is done.

Picked up 4 doors for $100 yesterday. I'm going to start the half door plans today. Still not 100% sure in how I am going to do them. There are so many different ways to go about it. One thing for sure is that they will have cup holders!

I'm going to buy an angle grinder and cut off wheel today and see what kind of damage I can do.
 
So here is short video of me testing the lockers at a small area in Colorado Springs. Don'tthink I will go there again unless testing something. Too much crap on my car after I got out.

This pit has got me stuck twice before. Super easy now.

Let me know when you begin this. I'm looking at 4 doors on Craigslist that I plan to do the same thing with. Trying to gut them, make em half doors, and of course add some big ol cupholders that can fit a 40 oz...soda.
 
Aww, I'm disappointed--what's with the hesitation at the other end of the hole? LOL! Truck had to take a moment to squirt that tire out, eh. So is there no record of your trip to Rainbow Falls? I thought we were going to see pics of you working out that new locker on the trails.
 
Holy 2" lift Batman!!!

So today I removed the rear bumper and factory tow hitch in prep for the eventual new rear bumper. I swear I am driving a different car. The rear is sitting AT LEAST 2" higher. Here's the pic to prove it.

The sound from the CD is wired in to my stereo deck. The power goes in to the cig lighter. The white cord goes up to my iPhone mount on the dash. Yes, the antenna is mounted on the inside of the cargo area. Ghetto! That is temporary until I get one mounted outside the car. Hey, it works.

I know it is all dirty on the inside. Cleaning that next.

Ok, so I have got stuck in the hole twice without lockers. I was nervous. As for Rainbow falls, we ended up on Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap instead. The Jeep guys haven't given me the pics yet.
 
Sorry I didn't realize the camera was set to low quality video, but you'll get the idea. Never would have tried this without lockers. Can't wait to get sliders so I can try some bigger rocks.

I watched 2 stock Nissans give up on this before I tried it. Looking at it now I could have taken a more risky line.

Video quality sucks, but you may notice where I almost slipped off a rock and bottom out, but......I didn't.

A good thing kinda happened during all this. When I took the bumper off, I noticed my tail pipe seemed really low and exsposed. One good bump and it was knocked in to a perfect position. I did manage to knock my rear window of it's track (wasn't really on there anyway). Now it won't stay up. Oh well, par for the course.

I'll get back to the build soon, but I need to break something first so I know what needs to be improved.

When I get to Colorado in a month or so I can help you build some. It's a pretty easy job and takes about a half day or so. That is of course with some f-off time and some beer here and there :)

I have beer if you can make sliders. There are a few good brewerys out here.
