Safari Snorkel releasing snorkel for 3rd-gen 4Runners

I may be in the minority, but I think that the Tacoma "nub" looks better than the "long arm" versions on 3rd Gen 4Runners. In my opinion not only does less tube on the outside of the fender look better, but why have all that tube on the outside when there is plently of room inside the fender for the air tube? I'm just not sure that the tube on the outside looks good on top of that body crease.

Defiantly personal preference, I love my snorkel, it's outside tube, it flows with my theme and I just like the way it looks all around

I spoke with ARB a couple weeks ago. They have the Snorkle completed, but they're doing "field testing". Of course I volunteered immediately to allow them to use my rig. They just laughed..lol!! I take it they hear that a lot.

Anyway...ARB advised they were very close. I was told to contact them around mid-March to see if it was ready. If no one else calls...I might give them a call Friday. By the way...when I called them, they refused to release any info as to what the Snorkle looks like or anything else. :noidea:

Can't wait to see this. I hope they will be reasonable on the price...although, I'm not holding my breath.

I totally agree. The long arm version looks like tonka toy cheezy. That short version has a much cleaner look.

Out of these two Runners...I personally think the blue one is frickin sick looking!! I like it much better....Well, except I wish it had the Taco Snorkle. I'm with yall...I like the Taco Snorkle better. (Please note: I do not know who owns either one of these rigs. Both are very clean and are super nice looking 4Runners. Just IMHO...I preffer the blue one.)

Surf Runner...I'm sure they will work around our electric antennas. At least IMHO...that's the only reason ARB would be making a 4Runner specific Snorkle...because other than our electic antenna, everything else is the same compared to the Tacos.

Unfortunately...that scares me because I'm afraid we are going to end up with the Snorkle going down the side of the fender like the red one. This would be the easiest and cheapest way to get around our antennas! We'll see here shortly...

Give credit where it's due. The red one belonged to [MENTION=60147]the great him[/MENTION] (rescue runner build) and the blue one belongs to [MENTION=38004]ryhi[/MENTION] (ryhi's build).

My 2 cents: only the earlier 3rd gens came with the extended intake tube behind the passenger fender. Safari Snorkel will have to accommodate for all of those who don't have one, and it makes more sense to offer an their own extended long snorkel arm/tube in order to do so, being that the factory extension tubes are removable. The shorter versions were made for tacomas since all tacos have the that extension tube from the factory. That and getting around the electric antenna motor and what not points towards a longer version or different placement.

ARB could easily accommodate later 3rd Gen 4Runners by offering an inner fender tube that is similar to the one found in Tacomas and early 3rd Gen 4Runners. This inner fender tube is easily found in salvage yards as well. ARB could also design a longer tube on the inside of the fender that connects with the elbow. If this were the solution early 3rd Gen 4Runners would only need to remove that factory inner fender tube to install the new ARB snorkel. In my opinion I don't think that ARB should design a long arm snorkel extending along the outside of the fender (covering up that very prominent body crease) just because of a short plastic extension tube that is relatively easy to find, easy to duplicate, and removeable.

The inner fender tube found in early 3rd Gen 4Runners is the same exact tube found in Tacomas that use the Safari Snorkel seen on the red 4Runner.

My 2001 4Runner only has the elbow, but I have seen a 2001 4Runner in a salvage yard that has a different inner fender tube than the one we are discussing. I will post a photo of it later when I'm on my computer.

first of all thanks for the kind words on my old runner. i miss driving it around, and i still see it around, unfortunately it just sits mainly. but i guess most toys do.
[MENTION=38004]ryhi[/MENTION]s runner is a wonderful runner as well and very clean. has a lot less miles than mine did.

so a couple of things here about this; one its ARB, so dont expect anything cheap, but you get what you pay for -ARB stands behind their products used or new, if its got the ARB name on it, they want it working. so to those of you who complain about its $400+ bla bla bla yeah it is, but its better than anything else out there. -i could grab my snorkel and shake the entire truck just by pushing and pulling on the tube... try that with a ebay knock off.
lead time and being willing to demo/test products; yeah get in line, the line is miles long btw. i know a couple guys at ARB, both are managers, one used to live a couple doors down from me and we were in the same 4wd club and wheeled together on several occasion. yes i got and still get discounts on ARB stuff and occasionally get kicked down some promo gear, but even i cant just get to demo stuff or field test stuff. i know of one guy(and he is on the forum here) who will be demoing/field testing some stuff for his new 2015 4runner but it was only because they reached out and asked, and he lived like 30min away from their US headquarters in Renton Wa. I work in Search and Rescue, and volunteer all of my time and all of my gear is out of pocket, so is all the money for gas ect and i still dont get sponsorship or anything like that from ARB, the Sheriffs dept i work for doesnt even get anything from them. its not that they are stingy or rude or dont care, they just have a business to run, and once they open that door its very hard to put limits on it, and people will start to take advantage. so i can see why they would respectfully decline(or even chuckle) at someone who offers up their own rig for product testing... yes it happens a lot. and i wont even begin to cover the legalities with it, hence why ARB typically owns all of its own vehicles it does testing with/on.

regarding the power antenna, im not sure the exact reason you can run the power antenna with the taco snorkel, as when i did mine, i had already done the taco whip mod. i do know however that the taco snorkel, is molded for the antenna and the fitment around the antenna is perfect. what is different and one of the reasons ARB is making a new snorkel specifically for the 4runner is that the tacoma and 4runner fender lines are different, the tacoma has more of an "arch" to the body style line and so the mold for the tacoma snorkel(like the one i used on my 4runner) does not match up perfectly and leaves some gaps. i know that will be something addressed with the new specific 4runner, i also believe what ever style they go with(long arm or stub) they will make sure that it is power antenna ready, as ARB always makes their products ingratiate seamlessly with their intended application. so i think those will be the two main things they are looking at in this new snorkel. as far as the design of the snorkel, it could be either way, they make both styles for various different applications. it would not be hard for them to make a tube that would be used by the later 4runners(mid gen upgrade and on) and not needed, or optional on the earlier ones. if you ask me that is how they will do it. use a short stubby snorkel similar to the tacoma one and just include a inner fender connection tube. one way of the other they will have to make a adapter tube, it will either connect to the elbow or replace the elbow, and ARB is not into making replacement parts like that. thats just my .02 from watching their designs past and present.

but the snorkel i used doesnt go down the side of the finder...? lol maybe you just got color blind for a sec lol -im with you here though, i think the long arm snorkels look cheesy, and like an after thought.

the taco snorkel is a whole lot nicer looking than the long arm, but I am just happy that the third gens will have a quality snorkel made by a trusted company that makes quality products... don't really care how much it costs I just want it to be released :zoom:
