Safety Connect ? For Limited Owners

Hi-

The T4R Limited comes with the 'SOS' button (Safety Connect).

I did a test call the other day to register and verify it was all setup and that they could in fact find my location. The call went fine and they are very nice. However, I noticed that the ONLY audio I received from the call was from the passenger lower door speaker. Because of this, the volume was very low. I know for Bluethooth calls, they come through multiple speakers and I have no issue with hearing them. But the SOS call is through a separte cellular phone system.

I am wondering if anyone else has made a test or real call to SOS and if their audio is limited to only one speaker.

I signed up for it when I bought mine, but I havn't tried it out yet. I Wonder how they would respond if I pressed it out of curiosity.

"This is Toyota whats your emergency?"..........."ahhh.......i just called to say hi" lol

Toyota called me about 3 months after I bought the car to tell me they didn't have all my information and that they would need it to be able to help me recover the vehicle if it was stolen. They were real nice and even told me I should test out the system next time I'm in the car and that when you do they'll give you your exact location, which is comforting to know that they could get to you if you needed help or your vehicle was stolen.

I noticed the same issue that it's nothing like the bluetooth - it was really hard to hear the guy, however I asked how the system works with a dead battery and they told me it should still work. It leads me to believe there's a small backup battery connected to the system (like a phone battery?) and it only has enough power for the one small speaker which makes sense. Dead battery is the most common vehicle problem and if you needed help, the system wouldn't work without it.

Note to self... don't get t-boned on the front passenger side. "Can you hear me now" ... uhh no... the door came off :zoom:

Okki

My trial expired and I didn't pay for another year. I wonder if my car is stolen and if I call them would they say:

1. Sorry, your account has been deactivated. We can not help you.

2. Your account has been deactivated, if you pay us right now for another year I can help you locate your car.

3. Not a problem. Let's locate your car for you.

It is normal for the audio to only come out on the passenger side. Mine does the same thing. My phone calls go to my "left" side speaker, SOS goes to the "right" and radio and sat go everywhere. I'm not sure why it's like that, but it is. Also, the NAV only gives guidance to me on the left side (probably to avoid annoying passengers).

BTW, I started a thread a long time ago to see if anyone even uses theres.

I'd appreciate feedback, I think I'm going to let mine lapse. I've pressed the button once, to test it.

I didn't renew mine either, I didn't honestly feel there was enough value there. I'm curious if they would respond if I were in an accident (ie.. airbags deploy). When you "don't renew", I wonder if it just drops all communication to them or if it still notifies them but they just say "oh look, guy rolled over. Too bad he didn't renew." Who knows. I have no idea, mine officially expires on 6/26. Maybe I'll try the button and see if it even goes thru after that.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I guess it is normal.

I will be renewing my service after the year is up. My safety and that of my family is worth it. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

My 1 year free SOS subscription ran out last November and they still answer, same as ever. I just tried it a couple of weeks ago as I was going to take that switch out and put something else there. Might as well keep it if it's still active.

Good to know, thanks Harper. I'm just glad the light stays GREEN, because if it went RED it would probably bother me. lol. Oh well, if Toyota adds more services to it I may consider reactivating it but for now, my AAA and iPhone will be just fine.

I need to verify that mine works. My wife is getting ready to drive cross-country with her g/f and it would be great if it still works under the 1 yr free subscription. I presume green means it's active based on previously postings above?

I believe green just means the uplink to Toyota is still working. I'm not sure what service (if any) they would give you if your subscription isn't active. Perhaps they would bill you or something, not sure, but I'd be curious to know.

I pressed my button the other day. It was really muted to the point where I just told the operator......."sorry i cant hear a thing your saying"......But then it got much louder.

So either she started speaking in her mic, or she was yelling lol.

From Lexus site.. looking for Toyota info but likely same

How do I know the system works?
The Safety Connect® system will display a green light by the SOS button-this light indicates the service is active. If a red light is illuminated, there may be a problem with the vehicle hardware and it should be brought to an authorized Lexus dealer.

If I cancel my enrollment or my trial expires and I choose not to renew, will the light in my vehicle change from green to red, or will it just turn off?

If you choose to deactivate your vehicle, the small overhead LED light will turn off. If the vehicle cannot be reached for 120 days-the vehicle has not been used or is in an area of limited cellular connectivity-the vehicle light may remain green even though service has been turned off. See your Lexus dealer for assistance.

What does the green light near my SOS button mean?
The green indicator shows that the system is active. All new vehicles purchased should have a green light before the customer leaves the dealership. When you are connected with a response center agent, the green light will flash on and off. Press and hold the SOS button to cancel the call, or stay on the line for the operator to respond.
