Indeed! I have logged every filling since June 2009. Ditto for my wife's car.

I won't argue about the fit & finish (there is plastic all over the vehicle), but I take issue with the line about reliability. That is the exact reason that I purchased another Toyota.
My previous '04 4R had over 200k miles when I sold it and I only had one minor $300 repair (coil) during its life. Other than that it was just oil and brakes.
I plan on putting at least another 200k miles on my '12. I will accept a few flaws for exceptional reliabilty, but I understand that is just my point of view.

The throttle response is certainly different than my 4th Gen. I was disappointed when I first test drove the 5G, but I came to appreciate (or delude myself, whichever) the fact that it was purposely designed for economy. If I want the speed/power it is still there. Otherwise, Toyota has made driving economically a bit easier.
I would have purchased a V8 if it was an option, but I wasn't ready to sacrifice Toyota reliability and gamble on another brand.

love my 4r, don't know much about previous generations, to be honest, the styling on those would prevent me from ever buying one. I only have 2500 miles or so, mostly highway I have been getting 18-21mpg. only regret is that I didn't get the built in inverter and entune. I bought a subaru forester in feb. 2010, within a few months, I regretted it, the car was a good car, but I bought a 23K car and what I wanted was a 33-35K car. over the next year or so, I researched a dozen or so cars and over time narrowed it down to the 4runner, I dumped the subaru off at a carmax, and flew home and started shopping for the 4runner. Nothing wrong with the subaru, just like the first post here, I bought a cheaper car than what I wanted and regretted my decision. But I am not going to criticize because I didn't research my purchase enough.

The reason I asked was because I had the same vehicle and got identical results. I now have the GX and I'm getter better mileage even though it is 800lbs heavier. I tow approx 4500lbs and on flat ground I get close to 17mpg on the highway.

Man you guys are brutal... let's be really clear, and add some color here.
1. I've owned probably 20 toyotas/lexii - of those 20 I've had 4 4runners, and 2GX's, in addition to those I've had 1 LX470, an LX450, and 2 L100 series land cruisers - so when I say the 5th gen was the worst of those, I feel like I'm coming from a position of experience - BUT I'm not knocking the 5th in comparison to OTHER non toyota options please note that. I would bet I have more than a million miles in the vehicles listed above, so believe me when I tell you I know what kind of quality to expect. By far the best experience we have had was an 07 v8 sport 4x4... in fact if i had been able to find one with decent miles I would have considered going back to one. In the driveway today I have a 97 supra turbo, a 2001 GS430, and now the L200.
2. Any smart guy who thinks a 30 minute test drive, or spending 10 minutes in the cabin oohing and ahhhing all the features is enough to REALLY get to know a vehicle is either prophetic or sadly mistaken. No dealer in their right mind is going to let me take the 4runner for a week, tow my supra to a race, and in general put it through my daily abuse. So to assume I was an uneducated or under read buyer is an abhorrent statement - I made a FAIR assumption that because we had had great experiences with OTHER 4runners we would have no less of a great experience with this one. For that I was wrong.
3. The towing capacity of 5000 lbs is a joke, my open trailer and car weight in right at 4400 ish, and in order to tow that my foot was on the floor the entire time. Is it DOABLE yes, is it safe? I didn't think so - so regardless of what the brochure says (which I still have and read MANY times) - there is no way to know how a vehicle will handle that until you do it. Yes there are things I could have done to compensate, load leveling hitches, air bags, etc... but that would not have dealt with the lack of available power.
4. The gas mileage is what it is, I really don't care if anyone believes me. We reset the counter after EVERY tank and left the eco light on - Our 4runner suffered from being a soccer mom car, lots of stop and go, to and from school, practices, etc - we generally get a bit below advertised for our family vehicle - but even I didn't expect it to be as low as it was.
I do find it funny that so many people take offense at my statements, I didn't state the 4runner was a bad vehicle, a bad bargain or a bad option - just simply stated why *I* personally was not happy with it. The fact still remains that a 5th gen 4R is still a better investment than most, will be more reliable than most, and will hold resell better than most
I wouldn't have replied at all except all the haters saying dumb crap like "well the OP must not have test drove" or "well did the OP not sit in the vehicle"... seriously stuff like that is just dumb, I'd wager I've owned more Toyota vehicles and driven more miles in them than MOST on this forum and making assumptions about my level of education or lack of preparation just shows you're angry, possibly ignorant, and went full ruh-**** in a post that was expressing an opinion you didn't like.
The 5th gen is still a great vehicle, but it's not for me.
now to be 100% fair, I will say that the new L200 LC also suffers from some of the same downfalls as the latest 4runner - the interior quality and materials are a significant step down, certainly lower than our 2004 L100, however it's thoroughly modern, the 5.7L v8 is great, and the 6spd auto does a fantastic job. The tow rating of 8500 is realistic. I have some of the same complaints about the L200 that I lobbed against the 5th gen - the difference is that it fits better for us and our lifestyle over all making it easier to overlook the quality change.
Both the 5th gen and the LC are more than 100% capable for any off road we do (light camping, SUV trails, nothing crazy) and both resells are off the charts so net net it's a solid wash for me.
I am absolutely a fan of previous L's but my motorsports ventures are speed/track related not offroad so the changes from L80 to L100 to L200 being less and less capable offroad don't concern me as much as it might some. The primary reason the L200 is the least sold SUV in the states is because toyota has done a terrible job marketing it and MOST *US* buyers would prefer to buy a platinum sequoia for 10k$ less... the Lx570 is sold something liek 5:1 over the land cruiser and it can sticker close to 95k, but lexus does a great job advertising it as a premium SUV option.
I didn't expect to start a 90+ reply thread, but at least SOME of the discussion has been useful.

lol it's a stock grey L200 with some sweet michelin SUV tires on it - I'll take a dirty pic of it when the wife gets home, the supra is far more interesting from a pictures perspective, but no it can't even climb a curb ;P

Supra has always been a favorite of mine, I've seen "suped" up (PUN intended) to 900 HP.
Personal pics have a different feel than Dealer pics.
I did look at the LC after your post, I find it strange that a 70k car has a third row seat that folds up instead of into the car - whats your take on that?

In every LC/LX we've had I take them out because I think it's silly - the LX570's are now POWER folding but still folding - it's silly for sure. However remember that's how the 3rd row was in the GX and the previous LC's.
We have left them in the L200 so far but IMHO it takes up a lot of room for no reason.
And proof I actually drive her, a few shots from my road trip from San Antonio, TX to Glacier National Park in Montana.

Those pics are unfortunately about a year old now, but car looks mostly the same, I've lowered the front a bit, centercaps are in the wheels (Street only) - the car is used for Road Racing, raping litre bikes, mile events, and I'm hooked on drag racing lately.... it's a well used car, it was my daily driver up until recently when I bought the GS430.
